Wet Figures

Posted by meronpan [www]

Was cleaning figures and decided to take some pics since it had been a while since my last review. To be honest I'd say ignore the water since that was really just me being lazy and not drying off the figures ^^;; Something about the (relatively) big drops on the surface of everything just doesn't seem natural... At any rate happy to hear any comments you might have on technique, composition or just whatever ^^

Do you clean your figures often? What do you normally use?

    usually I just brush off the dust, even though it was stored on a sealed cabinet, dust seems to find its way ~_~

    nice "wet look" hahaha

    I might want to consider giving them a bath real soon since the figus that are displayed outside collect dust real fast. The last time they took a bath was a month ago...

    Anyway love the closeup on Akatsuki's katana!

        that would be a bad idea. food coloring will stain just about anything.

    next time, you may try a little spray bottle to create a misty effect and more realistic drops on the figures if you want to try the wet look again :)

    I brush the dust off once a week. Might consider washing them, but I'm too lazy to dry them off. Does water leave water marks/streaks if air dried?

      i did notice water marks on rin's base 'cuz i let it air dry -_- haven't noticed anything on the figures themselves thankfully though i did dry them off a bit more with tissue/air blower after i was done shooting.

    ORZ @ the first pic. Never received my preordered Asakura... seeing pics of her is alway so cruel.

    Dusting my figures off from time too time, and washing them every two months usually. Using the Len-Vesper method:
    http://www.finetoo.org/index.php/2008/05/16/healthcare-for-figures/ Best method in my opinion, all my figures look still like new^^

    You're right, the big water droplets don't seem quite natural. Perhaps use a spray bottle set to mist to get a better effect?

    Also, since the Haruhi bunnies have fishnet, how do they do when subjected to water?

    Big droplets didn't seems natural right, I never had to use water to wash my collection since they can't collect much dust in my dust shield +1

      when i was making the poll at my blog i was specifically thinking of your dust shield +1 for the "no need to clean, i am dust proof" choice :P

        Ryoko bunny is HOT, I should think about doing another photo shoot for her with my new camera and light umbrella setup~ The droplets may not be very realistic, but it has their own charm in a way, wet Ryoko bunny, who doesn't want that!

        All that aside though, dust is a universal problem for collector of every age. As long as air circulate, there will be dust, there is no getting around it. Many people don't like my Ikea Billy and Dust Shield +1 system but I have always believe it's a reasonable compromise between display density, can easily scale from having a 1/3 Dollfie Dream to 1/8 standard PVC figures without losing any display real estate, can hide LED wiring effectively, optimum viewing angle for having large scale Dollfie Dream on the bottom floors, smaller figures on higher floors, can turn into Hikari Photo Studio as needed :P I can shut out over 95% of the dust problem with Dust shield+1 in place.

    Wow, the water drops like something special ^.^
    I usually brush the dust with a cheap oil brush which costs 1 US dollar.

    Is it ok to get your figures wet? I was afraid it'd ruin the pain or something. On another note, how can I get rid of some paint that rubbed of the hair and onto a shoulder?

      i can't comment on any potential long term effects but as far as i can tell it's pretty harmless. i was sort of worried about water getting stuck in little crevices and such so i would say make sure you have something method for drying them when you're done.

      also, if you decide to try it yourself, best thing to do would be to test a discreet part of the figure just to make sure the paint is going to be ok and all.

      for me the figures who i haven't gotten inside a display case were just getting way too much dust so i had to go for the soak ^^;

    Nice pics, although the water isn't really necessary to make the girls look nice ^^;

    I stil have to develop a good way to dust/bathe my figures, because the 'greasy' texture thing is starting to happen on 1 of them. But I somehow always end up smudging the dust when using a cloth, or rubbing the paint when using water o~o Am I doing something wrong?

      well, as i said it was more of a, "hmm they're wet and i'm too lazy to dry them off before taking pics" rather than a, "ooo i'm gonna be all creative and go for a wet look" ^^; and i would actually say the water makes 'em look worse in this case (hence why i said ignore it ^^;)

      hmm greasy texture doesn't sound good. are you handling your figures a lot? oils from your hands could be causing that. and so far i haven't had any paint problems with water... perhaps you're applying too much pressure? other than that all i can think of is the quality of the paint not being too great. if that's the case you might want to resort to a fine brush or canned air as alternatives? though be careful if you try canned air since the force can be quite strong if you're too close...

      take my comments with a grain of salt. i'm not an experienced figure cleaner!

        I checked Len-Vesper's guide so I'm gonna give that a whirl. I think I used a cloth that was too rough, plus too much pressure. The greasy thing is starting to happen on the hair of Kotobukiya's Konomi. I think it was to do with the material used there: bit more 'rubbery' than plastic. Thanks for the tip though, I'll use a brush with some water next time.

    I still need to set a date to clean my figures ^^; But I'll still be scared of damaging their paint or something. I know there are ways and things, but still, I'm always terrified of something happening to them, since it's such a chore to get them here in the States!
