Another review of one of the artbooks I managed to purchase just before leaving for a while. This one is by Aoi Nishimata, who is famous for her work in the eroge company Naval and more particularly, for her work on Shuffle!.

As I said in my last review, this is to help out the non-Japanese speaking crowd who go into places like K-Books, Mandarake, and Melon Books to know what is worth buying by looking at the cover. This particular book by Aoi is a collection of many works so I will show a bit of everything to give the reader an idea if they think it is worth buying.

This is the cover you want to look for. Aoi likes to use single English words for her works and she chooses very eye catching girls for her covers.

Aoi has an unmistakable art style that you will not confuse with any other artist. I have always been a big fan of hers and I was searching for these large compilation art books. This book is easily over 100 pages. Due to that it was difficult to present a good sample of everything in there.

Beautiful pantsu. :3

This book contains sketches as well as full color works.

> Img ID#27846 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

I'd say this book contains about 95% black and white pictures to 5% color ones.

But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Her sketches are beautiful. ^_^

I like her unusual hair decorations. First time I've seen so many hearts on a anime girls head.

> Img ID#27852 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

She looks a bit like Primula but I don't think she is. One of the critisims of Aoi Nishimata is that her characters look so similar to each other.

> Img ID#27853 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

She looks kind of like Aisia from Da Capo S.S. Maybe a bit older though.

> Img ID#27854 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

In this book, all the color pictures you see are covers from smaller books that have been combined into one compilation. At least, that's what I gather from the layout of the book.

Nice oppai.

Speaking of oppai, in earlier Aoi doujins she would draw alot of ero. I actually have an collection of earlier works from Aoi called White instead of Black. Thinking of reviewing it but I don't want to spam these. ^^;

Angel wings. Lately Aoi has been drawing alot of girls with angel wings. I could especially see that at that art display in Osaka.

> Img ID#27857 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Most character's Aoi draws are designed by her but occasionally she will try her hand at other popular characters and give them her style.

Even Aoi has gotten into the Touhou fandom. I did own a few bits of her Touhou artwork previously but these were all new to me.

This one is of Touhou's Marisa.

In case you didn't get enough Yuyuko and Youmu in my last review. ^^;

They look stunning in Aoi's style.

> Img ID#27860 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Udonge (or Reisen). Came out nicely I think.

> Img ID#27861 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

This sketch could use some polish. Youmu looks a bit blocky and her scabbard could use some decorations. Probably a rough draft.

> Img ID#27862 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Youmu with her fan.

Looking to get that famous fan (the one in her stage battle) for my Griffon Yuyuko figure review. :p

> Img ID#27863 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Marisa looks like she's ready for you. :p

> Img ID#27864 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Princess Kaguya. Not as loli as I usually seen her drawn.

Not a bad thing...

> Img ID#27865 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Cirno. She looks a bit off in her chest area. Are those oppai? There a bit too low for that I think.

> Img ID#27866 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

I adore this image and would like to see a colored version. No complaints at all with this one. Love the medicine cabinet in the back. Nice!

> Img ID#27867 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Wow, this is a long review. Probably the longest I've ever done. ^^;
Hopefully, when it's done you'll get a sample of Aoi's Big Black book. ^^;

> Img ID#27868 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Aoi Nishimata goes by the pen name "Joker Type". Look for that when looking to purchase these books.

> Img ID#27869 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

As you can see. Like Tony Taka, Aoi Nishimoto is also a master of making beautiful girls.

> Img ID#27870 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Last one. Hope no one was on dial up or anything. ^^;

To conclude, Black by Aoi Nishimata is a highly recommended collection of black and white drawings compiled from her earlier works.

This review was a selection of many pics to give you a good idea of what you are buying. If you like what you see, please purchase one of Aoi's compilations next time you visit Japan. Your best bet to find them is K Books and Mandarake.

      Yup, that's the one. One of my favorites.

      Dang, I have another artbook review made but I'm thinking three at once is a bit much. ^^; The one I have in mind is also Aoi Nishimata but has bare eyes. :p

      Thanks!

      This one was around 3,500 - 4,000 yen. A very reasonable price considering how much art you got in one book.

    If money were no object, there'd be a ton of artbooks I'd be bugging my friends to get me from Japan, this one (and White) being some of them.

    Alas, still job-hunting, and Gunpla are actually more of a priority for me...:(
