Neo-Revoltech Dancouga Review and Gallery

A hopefully informative review of one of last month's Revoltech releases, the Super Robot "Dancouga".

This is the titular mecha from the 1985 anime "Super Beast Machine God Dancouga", newly presented in a spanking new revoltech body by master sculptor Katsuhisa Yamaguchi.

This new Dancouga has been redesigned a bit, modernized as it were, and because of this, it now truly looks like a Masami Obari designed mecha. Sleeker lines, a beefier body, as well as those really broad shoulders, really shout out the fact that this is a SUPER ROBOT. A hulking brute of a beast, so to speak.

Like most Revoltech's, Dancouga's body has a lot of revolver joints, as well as some swivel points that increase overall movement. There are a total of 19 points of articulation.

The detail on the fig is superb, as you can see in the photos, from the lines in his face, the tank treads on his calves, to the tiny barrel holes in his side launchers. The colors are bright enough when they need to be, and since most of it is unpainted, they won't fade as easily, if at all.

The calf parts have a nifty gimmick. They fold in if you bend the knees far enough, making for tighter leg positions. This was previously seen on the earlier Getter Robo releases 2 months ago. The mammoth's ears on his chest actually swivel and rotate, and, coupled with the revolver jointed shoulders, enable Dancouga to move his arms in various sword-weilding positions.

Dancouga comes with 7 hands, the Danku-Ken, and the main cannon on its back. I'm disappointed though, that they did not see fit to include the Dai-Gun, his signature beam rifle, as well. My theory is that they only allocated just enough plastic in the toy's general design that they had to leave it out. That, or they were just being lazy or forgot, the buggers.

An excellent purchase I think for any Super Robot fan. More affordable than the SOC version, and loads better than the GN-Dou version. I would heartily recommend you guys get one if you can.

If the lack of accessories kinda has you down however, don't fret! The guys at Kaiyodo have made papercraft dioramas and parts for certain Revoltechs, and as you can see, they have papercraft models of Dancouga's booster unit. Just make sure you have good, thick paper for the wings, and thin ones for the cannons. Pretty cool when you put it on.

Yeah, it's a papercraft kit from Kaiyodo taht you can download and print out. Better than nothing I guess, though I'd prefer a more "solid" piece of equipment.

When it comes down to it, Revoltech is still the best in mecha action figures. Nice poses there.

While I won't argue that their poseabilty is excellent, the plastics don't really feel as 'solid' as I would like them to be.

The Revoltech joints are horrible at holding parts together in some cases and love to pop out.

Well, I personally prefer my joints to pop out than outright breaking. Loose joints can be fixed with either hot water or superglue anyway.

Black Wing. Unfortunately, the FINAL form only happened in SRW apparently. The Black Wing is really only as big the Eagle Fighter. But, I do have a weird theory that they're saving the Dai-Gun as a bonus part if they're gonna release the Black Wing.

I kinda doubt it, as the previews of the upcoming releases for next year show a lot of other robots, none of them Dancouga related. Still awesome though: Getter Robo Go, Grendaizer, Blade Liger, and transforming Valkyries!

Somewhat similar design, and characters too, but the overall story differs I think.

Too bad you didn't it like SRX. If you played the SRW OG. I remember his blade kick pose as he launched himself into the sky can be performed to perfection by Dancouga. Ryuusei just rocks in this aspect. Liked the review! Hope to see more pics. As a fan all I can say when you get this suit is...Yatte Yaruze! I love that line.
