first DSLR results

Today I was desperate to go out and take photo’s because I used a new camera for these shots. I was determined to go out and play this weekend no matter what the weather.

Although the images are far from perfect because of the lighting conditions and rain, not to mention my lack of experience, I think they came out pretty good, especially since using my new camera (a Sony a350 dslr) is very different to using my old Samsung point and shoot. However I still have a lot to learn.

Any tips, tricks or guides would be most appreciated.

One very annoying thing I identified today is that unless the camera identifies a focus point, it won’t take a picture. I press the shutter button but it wont take the picture unless it’s highlighted a focus point itself. Very annoying. Is that usual for dslr or is there something I can do to change that? This focusing thing only happens when I try to take a more close up picture and atm I am using auto focus while I learn the camera as I don't want to overwhelm myself.

Sadly all these photos were taken in jpeg mode. I fully intended to shoot RAW but I guess in my excitement to get out there I overlooked that factor.

Nice photo shoot. I like your compositions and use of depth of field. And they are just really cute too :D

I really enjoy using lightroom to process my RAW images, its fun stuff. What are you going to use?

I'm not familiar with sony dSLRs, but as to the focus issue, it might depend on the lens minimum focal distance or since its a close up shot the AF point isn't on what you want focused, does your camera have more than AF point, a way to select different ones? Does your camera have AF-L/AE-L button? the AE-L/AF-L function is very handy at times. You focus in on a spot, lock in your focus and exposure settings, adjust the frame to desired compositions, take the shot without the camera trying to refocus.

the upgrade to a SLR from a point and shoot can be overwhelming, but it seem you have good start.

    Good Luck.

Ahhhh right, I think you're hit the nail on the head with the focal distance point. Reading that makes perfect sense and I think that must be what it is. I've had a play with it indoors and its always the same distance when it won't focus and take a shot.

I do have an AEL button and after fiddlign around with it have learned how to take a much closer shot, thanks so much!

Even if it was in JPEG, neaaaaaat!

I'm sure there will be even better results when you start shooting in RAW~ *w*

Nice pictures. I am a newbie myself so I can't offer much advise. On the subject of focus point, I tend to think of it as double clicking a mouse, it will be easier if you think of it that way. I imagine it would be quite a frustration to try to handle it like a point and shoot.

Yes I know. I really wanted to shoot RAW, I was devastated when I put the photo's to the pc and noticed the jpeg files. I've read the manual for the camera now and set it up for RAW so no excuse for next time.

On the subject or RAW and JPEG, I think I saw a post here just a few days ago about a guy using an editor that can open JPEG and edit it like a RAW. May be you can tweak these pics that way.

    Nice shots.

I am also thinking of getting a DSLR for my anime figure shoots. Still a bit intimidated by all the terminology and I have never used one before.

Everyone had to start somewhere though, might give a shot when I get back home.

It is VERY intimidating, but I've always been the type who loves learning new things so it's exciting to me as well. I paid just £300 for my dslr and so far it seems very good. Entry level dslrs are getting better and better so its a good time to buy.

My camera dealer recomended the sony a350 to me because he said its a great dslr (it uses konica and Minolta technology), it had built in image stabilasation, a tilting lcd screen with live view (perfect for low figure shots when you don't want to lay down in the mud with them XD)

So far I really enjoy this camera, I can't wait to learn even more and get better with it.
