Hello!

If you follow my flickr you have probably seen this post already, but I thought I'd share with everyone here! As you might have heard, MDD standing ability (without a doll stand or something to lean on) is very inferior to DD as the knee joints are very weak and bend too easily to support the weight of the body. I tested a solution found by a member of a doll forum to use Volks Kips (which is a product meant to be used on Super Dollfie resin ball jointed dolls) and had surprisingly good results.

So here's Volks kips. They're some kind of clear plastic rings. They are meant to help with posing Volks Super Dollfie's (resin bjd) arms and what not. It's only 10 dollars! I bet one could find a cheaper alternative, but whatever, you have enough kips here to kips 3 MDD knees. In one pack you get 6 small rings and 2 big rings.

> Img ID#29609 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

1. Pull out foot
2. Take off soft vinyl leg part
3. Pull out the cap from the MDD leg skeleton
4. Unscrew the 2 small screws

> Img ID#29612 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

5. After removing the screws, take apart the MDD leg skeleton
6. Place the small ring size kips at the knee part.

> Img ID#29613 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

7. Screw the MDD leg skeleton back in place.
Do not screw too tight, screw just enough so there is a good amount of friction resistance from the kips. Move the leg skeleton up and down to get a feel for the right resistance.

> Img ID#29615 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

8. Repeat #1 to 7 with the other leg!
9. Put the soft vinyl leg parts and feet back in place (duh... =p~)
10. (not pictured) if your MDD also has loose hips, pop the legs out from the body at the hips level and then insert a big size ring kips at the hips joint. This will help a little.

> Img ID#29616 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Test the new amazing posing power of your kipped MDD!

(please ignore the toaster and other unrelated stuff in the back) =p

> Img ID#29617 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

"Look 'ma!! No head!!!" XD

Without the head on, the MDD body stands very very well once it's been kipped. The head and wig does add some weight on the body though so you still need to work a bit to find the balance once the head is on. But it's still WAY better then before kips.

> Img ID#29618 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

Even with bent knees, she can keep the pose for a very long time. Before I put in the kips, it was impossible to keep this pose even for 1 second.

> Img ID#29619 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

More showing off. I can now do pose with one straight knee and one knee slightly bent without any trouble. It looks more dynamic doesn't it.

> Img ID#29620 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

I am able to pose all 3 of them standing up at the same time without too much sweat now.

> Img ID#29621 | New tab | Mouseover = load notes.

You can still do normal posing even with kips in.

Ok this one has nothing to do with kips, I was just fooling around XD

pretty flexible uh?

You could probably get plastic washers from the hardware store as well, though you'd have to be pretty sure about the size of the rings first.

Same as coffee said, though transparent plastic washers is probably quite rare.

I had Airi by my desk (she is the only one I put right next to me more than once!)just now and I had her do the split, and she can as well!

Just occurred to me.. Another place you could potentially find something similar.. is at an RC hobby shop.. Planes/ cars. they would use washers as well.

Btw.. Chibi,, those kips are they flexible.. or hard?

          Then that really limits the materials that can be used.. I'd ask ya how thick they are.. but, I'd be wanting info like .032 . or .015.. I'm a machinist so I tend to over complicate measurements ^^;

Soft and squishy.. yeah.. Might just have to order some Kips and be done with it.. 10 bucks ain't bad.. but always trying to save a dime ya know.

I know what you are thinking, though most plastic washers found in hardware store are probably made out of Nylon and probably aren't squishy or transparent.

Was exactly what I was thinking.. till The soft and squishy part.. don't see too many nylon washers or the ilk that are soft and squishy.

Insert squeal here. I ADORE MDDs (and originally wanted my first DD to be an MDD, but then Moe came along...) and want one terribly, but wasn't so sure about getting one if getting her to stand on her own was going to be a hassle... this thrills me to no end. I'm going to have to start saving up for an MDD right away now!

And that purple outfit is SO cute! X3

Only thing I can say that I did thus far.. I will do this surgery obviously.. but I also hated how loose the body peices fit.. so I stuff Illya with a bit of foam and electrical taped it in place.. to prevent the body peices shifting oddly.
