I just read this post
I don't know why he end his hobby like that
and if you remember train man(densha otoko) in the manga chapter 19 he also throw all his figures
and think maybe someday we will end our otaku or not ????

is there a reason that can make you take an end to your hobby

facepalm.jpeg, just sell all your airsh*t and suvival junk and get one good semi-auto rifle. Trust me, this new hobby will never get boring.

Oh, you're talking about real rifles ^_^ Well, seeing how I my father owns a SLR 101 and I go shooting with him, I really don't need to buy a rifle right this moment. Besides, ammunition is pretty expensive ^_^. Geez, between all of my hobbies(otaku, airsoft, gaming, firearms, japanese, etc) I am finding it hard to to keep up with my hobbies.

I'll never stop what I started, and I will continue my hobby as an Otaku no matter what people think of me (uh oh parents *O*! -joke-). Sad though seeing all those figures smashed into bits and pieces rather than giving them a new home. :,(

At the moment University has taken too much of my time, so my anime is nearly down to one episode every couple weeks...I was never a big figurine collector (mainly cause of my shortage of money) so that wasn't affected too much. But I would hope that I wouldn't have to let go apart of me thats been with me ever since I was 4.

At one point I was certainly sick of anime, most likely of oversaturation because I was watching everything all at once. I stopped for about a year, but now I've started watching anime again, but am really picky about it. When I came back I also picked up the habit of buying figures... Now I can't stop...

although I haven't really delve into it, figure collecting:
why start: there are cute stuff out there
why stop: embarrassing when other people come over, money <- this is like main reason

    Gunpla/Figure making:
why continue: gunota in heart, love to craft
why stop: no time to build, no place to paint/use heavy odor stuff right now, money (not so much on kits, but on the supplies that I need)

    Manga reading:
why continue: stuff I want to read
why stop: it's getting harder and harder for me to get raw mangas without using the net

    Anime viewing:
why continue: b/c I hate American drama
why stop: sorta illegal what I am doing (even though I only watch RAWs), and even if I want to start buying DVDs/Bluray, the money man... As well, losing interest due to continuation of non interesting seasons.

    Gaming:
why continue: makes me feel young at heart
why stop: NO INTERESTING GAMES. Seriously, I can't play FPS any more due to some kind of motion sickness, same goes for most action games (although, I hate actions). No times for long RPG, and it just cost money man...

The thing that is most unlikely to stop is the manga reading. The most likely thing to stop is the Figure collecting, since I already stopped collecting TCG stuff. The second most is probably figure/gunpla making, and that's really a shame if I stop due to no time/no place to make it.

I agree with most of what you said, I personally have experienced feeling embarrassed when my aunt saw my two dakimakura XD but after a while it goes away and the next time its just a who cares for me though.

You have really nailed down why stop anime viewing/gaming, most recent anime consists of non-interesting plot due to the moe boom I believe, seems to be -if theres moe, theres fans- I personally have a list of the most epic anime i've seen but would not be consider so to the must have moe fans. As for games I prefer RPG and never liked FPS, reason being prefer story over constant interaction, but most recent RPG storylines are very uninteresting and the characters having a great sense of justice right off the bat making no room for major character development.

I don't think I could ever stop being an otaku. I've been an otaku pretty much since I was old enough to watch television, and it's such an integral part of who I am, I just wouldn't be me without my hobby. I went through a brief period of time in middle school where I tried to stop, but it tore me apart.

I think that my hobby won't get in the way of my life. A lot of my friends are otaku, but I also have "normal" friend. I'm enjoying life at university, and if I ever decide to get married, it'll have to be someone who is just as passionate about anime and figures and dolls as I am.

    Otaku forever!

Hmmm...well, considering that I'm not much of an otaku to begin with, more of an enthusiast, I'm not quite sure (^^;) I'm already scaling back my figure collection and have very stringent criteria in terms of future purchases if any. I'll probably have them boxed away and take them out from time to time as sort of a nod to nostalgia, or otherwise off load bit by bit as they become rarities and go up in value.

My DVDs I'll keep shelved up and watch, in addition to my art books. I'll even try and expose my family to some series - going up the scale slowly, if we have daughters of which I want then we'll sit back and watch Cardcaptors and keep to the light stuff. For the lovely lady in my life, I'll go with the romantic works by Makoto Shinkai. I'm sure she'll love that (>^^)> Same for manga, though considering just about all of mine are comedic dramas I'm sure the girls would find something they like. I've always been intrigued by art books, photo books and collections so I'll definitely keep the ones I have for anime and such.

I don't like considering myself as an "otaku", because it's a derogatory thing to outsiders in Japan and other places in Asia e.g. Hong Kong; there's a lot of prejudice against this group I have to say). One way or the other, I will probably reduce the number of stuff I'll be buying merchandise (1/144 gunpla less likely as they are small and more affordable), especially after this year. Figure collecting is an expensive hobby. Poseable ones are more interesting to me, but I will probably not plan to buy more unless there are some that I *really* like. Besides, to be a fan of anime and such doesn't mean I have to be an "otaku" with lots and lots of merchandise, figures, DVDs etc. Being a fan of anime or manga can be simple and clean. On the other hand, "oversaturation" is something that may happen to me soon - anime as of late are getting less and less to my interest.

Who knows, maybe one day I do get sick of things. I don't plan on throwing everything away should it happens; probably just keep things in low profile and leave it be so. That's just me though.

anyways, I'm glad this was brought up because, I'm actually hitting a low right now. It used to be that whenever i came back from the shopping I'd have tons of mamga, anime dvds and other assorted crap but just yesterday I couldn't find one damned thing that I actually wanted to keep, not one single series or item. then it got me thinking "is this how the end of all things Otaku starts?"

I've been a geek of some description most of my life (I started on fantasy novels and Apple computers from around the age of eight or nine and still have a keen interest in both) and my parents are both geeks, so I don't think I'm ever going to be giving up being an otaku completely. My hobbies may take new directions, and I may buy less figures to focus on another aspect, but I don't ever expect to turn away from my hobbies completely - it's an important part of my identity, and I've made quite a lot of friends through it.

    I don't think I'll ever stop loving anime. There are times when I take a break and move onto other stuff but I always find myself coming back. I might slow down on my figure purchases but that really depends on how much money I'm making in the future. I might even end up spending more. I'm only 21 so I don't know yet. ^^;

But I definitely wouldn't stop watching anime or collecting figures due to something like marriage or kids. I'm going to find a way to work around it. My goal is to have my own personal office or room where I can proudly display my collection and whatnot. It'll be my own personal space away from everyone else. :P

Good question. I've been an Otaku or Geek since 1995 and I am 25 years old. I began with all the traditional Geek past times (except Star Trek) Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and anime. They just allowed me to relax and maybe even to escape the tough times I was going through during that time period. Though, I know now, that I genuinely enjoy anime and it is not only an escape from reality for me.

Lately, I've been taking a look at how much stuff I have. If I have too much stuff, then I need to scale back how much stuff I buy. Otherwise, I will feel guilty. For example, if I had 20 Dollfie Dreams, I would feel incredibly guilty. I'd ask myself, what else could that money have gone to? Do I really need that many things?

That's where I am currently. I buy only what I really, really want.

    As far as dropping the geekness and the life of an Otaku all together.... I don't really think I can even if I wanted to. Even if I actually had a girlfriend or wife (the 3d kind), I would still need to have a side hobby and anime (and general Geekness) is what I enjoy most. So, to answer the question directly, I believe that I will always be an Otaku even if I'm getting senior citizen discounts at the Home Town Buffet. ^^;

LOL I remember that post, Otaku Dan already answered what was actually up already but about a week or so after that post he came back with a vid with a dakimakura healthcare ending.

The usual answer to ending an otaku hobby is if getting a real partner n all, I personally never had one so I have no experience in that field. Even if one day I do get one, I wouldn't want to throw away my collection because its like throwing away my own past.

It seems that most otaku have the sense of feeling pressured into throwing away their collection n what not when deciding to get a real life partner. I would like a clear answer to why some think that.

In my opinion we don't need to throw it away to fit in the crowd. Heck we can pass it on to our daughters and tell them that barbies suck in comparison to Japanese bishoujo figures. I'm not a huge fan of figmas since they don't look as close to the anime character as statue figures but heck figmas outclassed the barbies in every way except durability, man those barbies just dont get damage even being man handled.

I'm done ranting, so to sum it up if I lose interest I wouldn't want to sell them or anything, I think I would rather give it to my kids if I were to get marry someday and tell them the story of the anime from my time XD but as of now I'm happy with my "Wives."

Sometimes I just stare at the (rather big) pile of gunpla, manga and figures and thought why I bought them.
I try to think of a reason but nothing good comes out.
Sometimes I feel empty not knowing why I bought them (maybe just because of 'want').
Maybe I'm on the edge, the addiction pulls you back again and again..

I spend all most of my money on gunpla, manga and figures, some money on PC stuff, a bit on food and none on clothes.
The money and the space are reasons that made me rethink.

But I don't think I'll stop anytime soon...

Perhaps there is one tiny part in my whole consciousness that understands and knows the reason why.

Ok..i started being a otaku since 1993,i dunno what the cause of "anime"...it became popular in "sailormoon" & DBZ..until them,i realize that Otaku was a culture in japan, no,in all around the world..addicting in some arcade,PC (especially EROGE)..anything culturistic..
until today, maybe i retire being a otaku if i have a nice wife & a decent job someday..

Why should I quit now when I've only begun? I mean I look at my step-dad: He's interested in Star Wars, video games and other stuff and he's still playing his games, building his models, and my mom doesn't mind it. That's what i plan for my future! I plan to have an otaku wife somehow!!! Thats my goal!!! ^_^ but in reality, i may have to get rid of SOME stuff

I can't call myself an otaku since I'm not really addicted to anime that much (I'm pretty picky with what I watch) but I do collect figures. You might call me an "anime enthusiast" but for the sake of ease I just say "otaku".

Anyway I don't think I would stop being an otaku. I've been collecting stuff for as long as I can remember and the only thing stopping me is my wallet! I'll definitely continue to collect figures and watch anime even when I have a wife and kids. Heck, I might even get them to join me in my hobbies! A family that collects together, stays together! LOL XD

Oh that. That's melonpan (reknown for walking in the streets of Switzerland with his dakimakura) on one of his famous publicity stunts. He didn't exactly throw away his otaku stuff, just for fun really.

Maybe I'm "refusing to come out", but I wouldn't define myself an otaku. I think I got scared shit silly seeing how outlandishly geeky they can be portrayed in Densha Otoko, and as a result I always took conscious efforts to dress up smartly so as not to appear as one, even if I could have habits (and fetishes) like one. lol

Anyway, while nothing is impossible, but at present, I don't see myself getting rid of my manga and anime interests anytime soon.

I probably won't be too involved with otakuism in the near future. Namely because of school and the field I plan to study in.

However, I don't see myself quitting it completely. It's a hobby I've had for almost 8+ years - it's something that makes me who I am. To get rid of it is like getting rid of a piece of me ^^

Right when I was at the edge of forgetting that post of Danny's XD

Sometimes I think about this kind of thing, mostly pretty deeply. But my otaku way is about mechas, so if I leave it, then I leave the mechas too, and I don't think My life will be that pleasant without them XD
Sometimes I got critiques from my friends about being childish because I watch anime. Well, don't blame them, they don't know, that's all. And it's fine to me too, so it's no problem. But mechas? If they tried to criticize me about that, of course I'll return fire XD

I won't exactly throw away my hobby but I will cut down on my spending when I feel that I'm approaching the end of life. While seeing other peoples room that are full of figures, I can't help but think what to do with them when I eventually do get bored of this hobby.

start watching anime since... as long as I can remember, in fact, I know Doramon, the little pirate kid, Cyber Drive Formula before any Disney shows or movie.
It has become a part of my past, my identity, don't think I can ever throw that away.

Plus I don't wanna have kids because I have a few bad experiences with kids wrecking my anime things.
