My first L lens

Posted by Tequila [www]

Talk about new toys, I finally picked up my first L lens – Canon 70-200 F4 IS
according to many users this telelens is the sharpest zoomlens Canon has ever made.

When I upgraded my camera, I decided to upgrade my lens collection too (because EF-S lenses won’t fit my fullframe camera) – still, spending a grand on a single lens still hurts the wallet XD
One of the most noticeable things is that the autofocus is much faster than any other lens that I own: it’s so smooth and quiet. I guess this is why people are raving about L lenses: it costs (alot)more, but you get top quality in return. Not only IQ wise, but speedy AF, weathersealing and superb built too ^^

Even though I’ll be using my Tamron 28-75 F2.8 as my walkaround lens most of the time, I want the longer focal length for portraits. If you haven’t checked, I had a great time shooting models at this Zoom Experience event last month :)

      thanks! I'm shooting with a Canon 5D :)
It took me ages to decide which version to get - there are 4 versions:

      70-200 F4
      70-200 F4 IS (IS = image stabilizer)
      70-200 F2.8
      70-200 F2.8 IS

the F4 non IS is a great choice too (costs only half of the IS version), but knowing myself I couldn't handhold it at 200mm without shaking...and I want to be able to use it indoors as well.

Nice, congrats on getting such an awesome L lens. ^^

Wish I could afford some L glass for my 450D but my skills aren't worth such an expensive lens yet. Do wonder if I shouldn't try and upgrade my walkaround lens from the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS kit lens to something sharper with more zoom range... and that's still affordable.

The kitlens that you own is not to be underestimated, it's a fine lens (the non IS version was rubbish though) - and it pairs up perfectly with the 55-250 IS (if you need tele that is)

If you don't need the IS (if you always shoot from a tripod, or have stable hands, always shoot outside on sunny days), 70-200 F4, makes a really affordable L lens. (along with the 17-40)

Man, those are amazing landscape/nature shots! I really want to visit the canyons someday.

I have nothing against non-canon lenses: I own(ed) Sigma, Tamron lenses too. But my favorite 'non' canon lens manufacturer must be Tokina: they build their lenses like a tank!

Nice choice man, you'll get some great shots out of that. I used to use one for motorsport work and it takes brilliant pictures.

Nice lens man. I just got into the whole photography thing from my photo class. It got me real interested in DSLRs. I bought a KissX3 hoping to learn. Maybe in a few years I'll move up to a 7D. By the way, where did you buy your L lens?
