Well, for one, they're not a common sight. It's usually just monotones of white, black or some lacy fabric and the odd bright/pastel color just not in stripes.

Possibly either the lack of shimapan over the last long while is why it's so popular, or maybe it's the kind of realism, since not that many girls actually have the white pastel with the little bow, but everyone I know has striped ones XD

Or it could be just the characters who sport it. Almost always the moe characters seem to have it.

I am also interested in this so call shimapan fandom, it make absolutely no logic to me at all. In my opinion, it's butt ugly, I will take a lace one over shimapan any day of the week, actually twice on everyday.

Even when you say that, I can't find a "true connection" between shimapan and moe blob other than a certain moe blob anime featuring a certain moe blob wearing some shimapan. But there is no compelling reason why a moe blob need to wear a shimapan for any specific reason.

The design is a matter of taste and appeal. Logic isn't relative because taste is fully subjective.

You either like it or you don't (^^)

I think stripped panties are cute, though I also like it when girls wear lace or some frills as well.

I am not questioning the existence of stripped panties, I personally don't like it but it doesn't bother me all that much. My beef has to do with the overwhelming popularity and fandom around it, which make no sense.

You missed the point I was trying to make (^^;)

It's a matter of taste, and mass marketing to address your other question. Again, some people like the design, some don't. The seemingly widespread use of shimapan in anime, manga, games, illustrations, etc...is basically just finding what enough people like or have an interest in and just playing off that. If enough people like some particular, whatever it may be, someone somewhere will use that as a tool to advertise, market, profit, garner attention, etc...

It's similar to the "moe maelstrom" in anime these days. You have production companies including moe characters or moe moments in their anime because right now that's what sells.

What you're trying to do is rationalize a person's taste, favoritism, fetish, etc... in something. That in itself is hard, or impossible to do if you don't share that same liking. You have to think objectively.

And if you still have beef with it after all that, that means your just sick of seeing it everywhere. Oversaturation basically (^^;)

I myself like the design, but I also get rather irritated seeing it everywhere all the time. I like variety. If every girl wore shimapan, I'd have my girl wear something else (--)

    Let's simplify it by meanings:

Panties with laces or flowers decoration = Adult, sexy but also brings slut and SM feeling
Panties with bear, cat, dog or watever printed = lolicon, nuffsaid.
Panties with stripes or Shimapan = a teenager or innocent girls. Somehow mostly "moe" character would wear that.(have you notice?)

    which would you prefer?

I think I missed the part where the good-old lacy nighties are reminiscent of "slut and SM feeling". I for one think laces are very tasteful. Also, animal-print pantsu are characteristic of innocent girls of all ages, not just the lolis.

Lace panties are not slutty! I find that comment of yours pretty insulting even though I know I shouldn't.

Lace panties are sexy, alluring and very womanly. Lace gives you a a real feeling of elegance and it does help you feel 'sexy'. My fiance loves me in lace panties and while he would say it's adult and sexy, he'd never call them slutty. I don't know any real man that would. Sexy and Slutty are completely different things.

As an apparel design, I find stripes just "Ewww!" ugly, especially in the case of Hatsune Miku. She wears such an interesting (and one might even say futuristic) costume, but her underwear just look so ugly. Seriously, green and white stripes? Ugh! I can only hope it's some otaku fad idea of stamping stripes on all underwear, instead of being part of the original costume design.

I can't wait for the fad to die off so we can move on to something more interesting.

And there I was, thinking I was the only one annoyed by that detail in her design. I guess it is only fan-driven, like most of anything in the vocaloid universe, yet it's true it's just plain weird that someone came up with this kind of combination.

Personally, I dislike the stripes, no matter if their on panties, thigh-highs, shirts or any other clothing items. Pinstripes maybe (At least for regular clothing, for underwear, not so much) but the apparently quite popular wide stripes don't appeal to me at all. Especially on the thigh-highs and panties they give me a weird clown association- and I really hate clowns. A lot.
Call me narrow-minded, but I personally love the plain black stuff. Lace is fine, and so can be white, but plain black is where my heart (fetish?) lies.

Maybe my opinion doesn't matter in the same was as your regular 'male otaku' opinion, but I'll post it anyway.

As a woman myself, I love striped panties. Not just striped panties, but colourful and patterned panties in general. Lacy and sexy panties are nice to wear in the boudoir, but I find they aren't the most comfortable to wear on a day to day basis while I'm at work all day. Sometimes they can be very elaborate and just not right for a whole days wear. But while plain cotton panties are the most comfortable, you don't want an endless drawer filled with plain black and white panties.

I like variation in my panties and I have panties in all the colours of the rainbows, I have patterned panties with stripes and dots and love hearts on them, I have panties with a frill around the edge and I have sexy lace panties too. I must admit my striped panties are among my favourites, I love stripes in general, striped panties, socks, gloves, scarves, t shirts, cat's, tigers, zebras. I just love things with stripes on them, a lot of girls do.

I don't know the appeal of striped panties from a guys point of view, but from the ladies point of view, I think that most women like stripes. I live in England but you can find so called 'shimapan' everywhere. It's a very popular style for woman and girls a like. Even though most people don't show their panties off to the world, us women like to know we're wearing something good. Pretty and cute panties just make you feel good.

Stripes broadcast a cute young girl image, as do checker patterns and little flowers. It goes right along with the moe blob cutesy image as notably most younger teen type characters seem to have them. It says not loli yet not woman. lace can be perceived in many different ways from elegant to slutty, and I think a lot has to do with the type of girl wearing it.

Why is shimapan such a big thing.. Uhm.. No fricken clue.. Maybe its the same reason Parachute Pants were the in thing in the 80's . Or Z Cazarichi pants in the early 90's. Seriously. Who the hell knows. Some Marketing guy heard an Otaku go.. Oooh Shimapan.. and then the market was flooded with girls flashing their striped panties.

Personally, I wear boxers, and I have boxers of many different colours and patterns. I would imagine a woman would prefer her 'roo's having.. Variety. Since, well.. lets face it guys.. Tighty Whities everyday is as boring for them as it is for us.

      Are you sure you won't be getting hate mail for saying a certain mob-blob anime is overhyped? ^^;

Surprisingly, despite my sentiments for Shimapan, I can't help but agree with him.

You spoke my mind, although I might not have come out and said it like you did. I call to question the unjustified popularity of that "certain moe anime" and the associated merchandises that got shovel on my face everywhere I go because of the overwhelming popularity. We freedom fighters need to stand up for ourselves and question the validity of that popularity but not necessarily marginalize them.

I find that assertion insulting. Just because you find K-On overhyped doesn't mean others who do not share the same opinion are unable to choose things for themselves. Using terms like ZOMG only makes you look irrational and biased.

Certainly, popularity trigger curiosity, it sends the word out. "Hey, I wonder why there's so much talk about K-On. I'll go check it out and see what's all the fuss about." That's the reason which drew me to find out more about Cowboy Bebop. After I borrowed it from a friend and watched it, I realized it's just garbage. However, I'm certain those people who genuinely like Cowboy Bebop so much have their reasons for liking it. No one is brainwashing them to like it, or twisting their arms to post how good it is.

I find it funny how quickly people accept opinions that mirror their own without question, and how they question the thinking capacity of other people who do not hold the same opinions.

Though your post is valid.. One has to admit.. a lot of people just follow the herd as well. Cause, A Person can be rational and decide for themselves.. People are irrational and follow the flock.

    It's a trend.
Random things might become popular overnight because of image boards and stuff.
Also, shimapan is... visually a strong "brand", easy to reproduce, and simple.
Everyone is entitled to like it or not, of course... but it's just like when white pantsu with a red lace thing was what every Otaku liked.
And then, kuma pantsu, ichigo pantsu, etc etc.
It won't take long before something else replaces it...

I think the important thing here is to respect other's tastes.
About the overhyped discussion - I think liking stuff (trends, animes, etc) just because everyone else does is just as bad as hating it for the same reason...

For certain characters stripes have their appeal. But as someone has already mentioned, they do indeed show off the curves nicely~

what is wrong with sweet, feminine and lacy?

white or pastel shades with beautiful feminine lace trim?

what a weird world these days...

So the first time my bf saw my undercrackers, he said "ooooh striped panties". It was cotton stripe panties that I got in an 8 dollar pack of 6. I have so many cute cotton panties from victoria's secret with prints like strawberries, safari pictures, hearts and cupcakes none of which got a reaction like the tacky stripes. It confused me at first then I remembered that he watches anime. It made me wonder why there's so so excitement over such a boring pattern. A guy once told me "every girl should own a white pair of cotton panties with small pink hearts". I can understand that, but stripes? YAWN! Then it hit me, Maybe it's because the character is wearing something that is comfortable and isn't showy at all. It seems like it creates a vibe that the person wasn't expecting their underwear to be seen hence wearing such unimpressive underwear, therefore seeing it is more like the forbidden fruit? That's just my guess.
