1/144 HG XXXG-01SR2 Mk.II-04 "Sandrock"

Posted by Karl

This was my very first gundam kit after doing military kits for 5 years or so. I entered this in the 2008 BAKUC Philippines contest. I remember buying this one for cheap in a hobby shop in Hong Kong so I decided to try out my hand in modifying a gundam kit.

- Face was "gundam destiny-fied"
- Upper Torso was up-armored by styrene sheets
- Lower torso was sawn in half and a ball joint was added for added posability
- Shoulders were reduced in size and overhauled
- Shoulder joints were modified to swing out, preventing the need for the extra torso
- Scratchbuilt elbow double joints and rotating upper arms (Similar to MG posability)
- Scratchbuilt hands
- Scratchbuilt "thrust vectoring" F-22 style thrusters in the backpack
- Modified front skirts to swing independently
- Skirts were beefed up with styrene sheets
- Hip joints from sawn-off 1/100 shoulder joints (It can do Chuck Norris kicks)
- Uparmored the legs and feet with styrene sheets
- Scratchbuilt double ball jointed ankles
- Scratchbuilt machine pistol and knife
- Sharpened Heat Shotels
- Sratchbuilt Shield with handpainted Arabian markings. If you know Arabic, you might find it funny
- Sratchbuilt vignette base from styrofoam, wall putty, styrene sheets, sprues, and other bits
- Custom airbrushed paint scheme.

Maybe you should start modding MGs and auction them off like Keita ^^

    Love the mod.

O.O Dang, you are really talented. Sandrock was probably my favorite Gundam in Wing but it's been ages since I saw it last.

Curious to what the writing in Arabic is.

awesome, I don't really like Gundems they kinda look clunky to me with like the red and blue blocked parts, but this one looks awesome and the paint job makes it look very realistic and wicked, great job :D I'd buy Gundems if they all looked like this!

Holy... awesome work!!! Are you planning to join that Gundam competition by HLJ(?)? Because if you are, then I hope you win XD

I always wanted to learn how to mod kits. But it looks like one needs a ton of extra cash to start; something that I really lack right now XD

Modding gundam kits is waaay cheap compared to buying resin kits or conversions. What you actually need is imagination and creativity. I suggest that you master the basics of building models first (gluing, mold line/seam removing, painting) before you go into modding or you'll end up having a kit that looks like it has random bits stuck all over it.

Karl, you say that you use styrene sheets for your conversion, I was wondering if you also use plasticard? And how it feels for gunpla.

I'm not really sure but I think they are the same material. Styrene sheets basically mean Polystyrene sheets which is the fancy name for a kind of commonly used plastic. It works well for the hobby though. I use Super glue or modelling cement to make it bond and paint easily sticks to it.

The colors, posabilty, and a whole lot more into one magnificent model. If I were to grade that I would give it "F".
    F for FABULOUS.
