Nendoroid Ryuk Bootleg check
Fri 2009/12/11 21:52 JST
I was walking around the local mall here in my place.. and i saw this really cheap Ryuk Nendoroid...
Who doesnt love Ryuk? He is the coolest looking Shinigami( did i spell it right?)... Was planning on buying it.. but the php 450 price looks rather fishy... I took some pics(with permission from the salesperson) to ask you guys to help me verify if its a bootleg or not..
Note: Sorry if it isnt in the right category.. I got confused where to post it...

Looks about the same as the legit one on my shelf. Easiest way to tell is that the bootlegs generaly do not bother with extra protective plastic wrapping around some of the parts. If looking deeper into the pack I notice the clear base in my box is wrapped in a plastic protective bag. Note Ryuk is not wrapped in any film though with mine.
Also on closer observation I can make out the GSC smilie face thats printed on part of the neck ball joint. Not sure but I don't recal bootlegs going ss far as to replicate that.
On looking longer at your pics I notice his nostrils look skewered? Poor camera shot perhaps but mine are symetrical.
You can also do some ebay searches and compare pics from the really cheap bootlegs and the more expensive legit ones.
I hope this helps you.
Looks like original, but the photo quality is too poor.
It doesn't look bootleg to me, just compare it to the hobby search pictures of the packaging. Here's the link: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10057234
If it was bootleg, I doubt the owner would let you take pictures!Plus the figure is quite old
Guys, that's definitely a bootleg. Php450 is but a quarter of the price of the standard Nendoroid in Philippine Peso.
@Obe-Kun
Lemme guess. You saw this in either Bestoys, Greenhills or some Comic Alley store either in GH or Megamall.
The pictures aren't clear enough to show the difference in the print quality of the box. But trust me, this is a bootleg Nendoroid.
Average cost of a Nendoroid here in the Philippines (after shipping and everything else) would be around Php2,000.
Plus, most bootleg Nendoroids are either from the Deathnote series, Haruhi Suzumiya series, or Lucky Star series. Although I've started to see some bootleg Nendoroids from more recent releases like Sebastian Michaelis.
Thanks Suteki for the reference pics... And now I know that it is definitely a bootleg... There should be a logo right above the Good Smile Co. text... And the Ryuk nendoroid (that I posted) doesnt have one.. although the price is really cheap... Ill stay away from it.
@Frost thanks for the insight.. Ill try looking for other Nendoroids... But here in Cebu.. they are really hard to come by...
I can't remember if Pats ships locally but I'm sure an arrangement can be made if you contact him. (Pats Sy is the owner of Wasabi Toys)
Also if you monitor production of Nendoroids, Ryuk is basically a discontinued release. Therefore, any original Ryuks lying around are most likely marked up and not marked down.
No problem! Just looked real to me haha, guess I was wrong. Probably pictures were too blurry!
The pictures are too fuzzy to make a clear determination whether it is a bootleg or not. Aside from casting and paint quality, one way to find out is to check the eyes. The authentic Ryuk has decal eyes, while the bootleg one has painted eyes.
You can check out a side-by-side authentic Ryuk vs bootleg Ryuk at the link (http://unknowdata.wordpress.com/2009/11/27/review-nendoroid-ryuk-vs-bootleg-fake/ ).
In the weblink, you can see there are detailed background patterns on the side of the authentic box. The bootleg box has very faint or missing background patterns.
I could tell bootlegs by the color of the box. Usually bootlegs have a darker and jpeg-like quality to their packaging. I remember going to Greenhills and saw that cool Haruhi bunny nendroid set, but it was obviously a bootleg. The figure was coming apart IN the packaging! D:
Overall, its really hard to find legit figures at places like Greenhills, Devasoria, 168, etc. I only lived there for 2 years, but not once have I came across a legit figure in Greenhills. Your best bet is to order online if you can.
If it's cheaper than the ones reliable places like HS or HLJ offer, then chances are it's a bootleg. A place with originals (Anime Jungle for ex.) will always have theirs above Japanese price.
Its fake, there is no sticker that shows its legit and the printing on the box is also wrong. The printing is suppose to be alternating, but fake ones are just printed in straight lines. Well that's all i can tell from the pictures.
