[WIP] Saber lily, with a twist!

Posted by GundamJehutyKai [www]

I haven't posted anything on Figure.fm for a while so I thought I would post this WIP which I had been planning for some time.
I felt that I wanted to do something different from the regular Saber Lily owners, seeing as everyone seems to have her and I wasn't that interested in the figure once I got her. Apon seeing a mod over on the FG boards, I thought I would try and see if I could make her cast off!

Mouseover = load notes.
[WIP] Saber lily, with a twist!

She still needs a little cleanup and the paintjob needs to be retouched but I did indeed manage to make her cast off!

Mouseover = load notes.

Just in case you were sceptical before.

Mouseover = load notes.
[WIP] Saber lily, with a twist!

And here are all the parts laying around on my desk.
I did a bit of a "what I did" post for my weekly blog post and tried to talk through how I got the armour off.
If you want to try it out for yourself, it may help you along.

It wasn't exactly easy but not as hard as one would think. Having said that, I think most people here would rather keep her as she is.

      Several reasons actually.

      Firstly, I wasn't actually all that fussed about the figure. I preordered her back when she was announced and the hype machine was at full strength and then forgot about her until I received a message from HLJ saying that she was shipped...
      Secondly, I'm more of a Garage kit builder so I'm used to working and doing little mods on figures to make things work. This didn't seem that difficult so I thought I would give it a shot. I don't usually buy PVC figures, much less mod them, but this seemed like a good opportunity to just give it a shot.
      Thirdly, It's probably because of my GK background but I would prefer to have figures which aren't quite so rank and file. Everyone has (or desires) Saber Lily and she's a decent figure but given the chance, I would prefer to make mine a little more unique, like my GK.

      Honestly, I had totally forgotten about her until I received a shipping notice from HLJ and by then I was stuck with her. By the time I picked mine up, I had seen a least a dozen reviews and posts of her from various bloggers so when I looked at her in the box, I was massively underwhelmed. I even got a few offers to buy her off me but I figured that I spent the money on her so I might as well see what I can do. And if it screws up, then I wasn't that interested in the figure to begin with. It's not like a GK where you can REALLY screw up and everything goes wrong

      I was just planning to keep her as close to her original colourscheme as possible and leave her at that but I'm open to suggestions so long as it doesn't increase the costs too much. The saber alter seen over at tomopop shouldn't be too hard (heck, I even joked that I could do it on their post but I bet I could!) but the additional swords used on the base would require another saber lily purchase, which I'm not so keen on.
      Shouldn't be too hard to change the damaged area under her foot into a small river of blood tho...

      Very true. But at least it's only easily scratche off from the underside so most people shouldn't experience it and it should be easy to fix if you have an airbrush.

    i bought the original and bought the gathering GK version too, intending to change its color scheme to more... gothic red-ish
    i keep the PVC as they are, since if i screw up, tho i'm not THAT fan of saber, only saber lily design, i'm NOT willing to throw my 100U$ around with my "learning"
    i'll have 2 version of lily if manage to finish my gathering GK

    oh btw, how do you paint clear parts?, i want to change mine to clear reddish but have the same tone of the original (clear white)

    where you buy resin for diorama's and other diorama making stuffs, you post any of that information in your blog?

      just what in hell did the artist do!!!???? my bet is he use pla plates for those lace details, but what kind of color is that!? the lace transparent paint

        Your guess is as good as mine but I don't think pla-plates were used on the lace. It doesn't look angular enouh to be pla plates. You would see sharper edges if tha was the case, I think. I'll have to have a closer look to answer the lace question but my first thought was a standard flesh colour with the lighter lace colour misted over afterwards. Which would require godly masking skills.
        As for your first question, if you're trying for something similar to what the PVC did, then I would advise mixing your desired shade of red, thinning it a fair bit and then adjust your airbrush pressure to a low setting and/or holding the airbrush a greater distance away and lightly "mist" the area. The paint particles should be more spread out due to the low pressure and large distance so there will be "gaps" where you can see thru the base area.
        I document any mods I do in WIP posts as I build my kits but my mods are rather minor and just add to the base figure. Gamera baenrae has a good tutorial on how to cast extra parts from resin and codys coop is brilliant for tutorials on how to make custom bases and heavy modding. Worth a check but it all depends on how much you plan to change from the original.

      Design-wise, it was probably just easier to mold pieces separately and then assemble them later. Most figures with multiple laters of clothing/armour often work that way.

      But I can tell you now that the chestplate would have a hard time staying up without the holes in sabers chest. Her womanly charms aren't sufficient to keep the armour up by themselves...

    Creative idea! I thought it might've been the recast GK, but no. This is the real figure isn't it? I applaud you! Good luck with her :D
