Your favorite Japanese "fast food"

Posted by luki [www]

Hey everyone...

I was just making some Onigiri and thought I would share them with all of you and take the opportunity to ask about what your favorite Japanese "fast food" is? When in Japan, I pick up at least one Onigiri per day, as I can eat it everywhere, anytime and because I just love them... ^^

I missed them so much back in Germany, that I started to make them myself and I must say they turn out just like the Japanese combini ones as for the taste and I think that is a good sign :D

The ones you see in the picture are my all time favs filled with tuna paste (tuna mashed with mayonnaise and a little bit salt and even less pepper).

So what about you? What do you like? Do you know of some good websites with recipes of Japanese food? Anything else to tell us :P ?

I'm really looking forward to your answers.

Luki

Just one with nori as I don't want to eat all of them now and I wrap them in nori just the moment I want to eat them (if possible) as it tastes better because the nori won't get wettish and chewy this way

    I've been meaning to try making onigiri but never gotten around to it. ^^;

    I think my quick snack of choice on my last trip to Japan was nikuman.

      the shape of them is really nice and neat! I put salted salmon (shiozake) in mine and sometimes add the rice seasoning mix which is seaweed or salmon. as for the shape mine could still use a little work ^^;

    I like my onigiri best fully wrapped in nori and with a big umeboshi inside, yuuuuuuuuum. Katsuobushi flakes mixed with soy sauce also makes a good onigiri filling.

    My other "fast food" favs would be takoyaki, okonomiyaki (is that even considered fast food?) and tonkatsu. I love that red okonomi sauce or tonkatsu sauce, so good.

      Wow quite good German you speak there my friend:)

      Japanisches Essen ist vom Preis her durchschnittlich bis teuer.
      (As for the price Japanese food is average to expensive)

      But costs more than in Japan of course.

    I do love me some onigiri and those look great.
    I think I averaged about an onigiri a day when I was in japan. Here in NYC I'm closer to 2 onigiri a week but I'd have more if there were conbinis around. I usually get salmon ones myself. When I make them myself I roll them in wasabi rice seasoning.

    I'm torn with my favorite fast food tho. Takoyaki, Ramen and Curry are favorites almost to a point of obsession with me. Mmmm Ramen Jiro ninniku mashi mashi is sooooo good.

    Hmmm snacks... Pocky! Men's Pocky!
    Also been snacking on chocolate cornets alot.

    I never really thought of Onigiri as a snack. I always get 2 - 4 as a meal or part of a meal.

    Onigiri is really good - I mostly eat umeboshi ones because I love the sour taste, although sometimes I get ones with konbu filling as well.

    I also really like inarizushi, and often pick it up for lunch when I'm lazy or too far from the dormitories to go home to eat.

    Favorite Japanese fast food to make? Curry Rice. Curry sauce goes together so quickly that even though it takes a while to simmer the meat and the veggies before you stir in the curry roux it winds up being pretty easy. Have some rice in the rice cooker at the same time you start the meat and veggies, and you have good eatin' in about an hour.
    Favorite Japanese fast food to get out? I love a good noodle shop. Miso ramen is my favorite kind, although I've had some good tonkotsu ramen too. I also like stuff that is hard to make at home, like chicken katsu and tempura, although I really shouldn't eat this kind of stuff. And sushi...gotta have that sushi.
