How do you display your figures?

This is my main figure display a few months ago. As you can see, I have everything arranged by anime - all the Eva stuff together, all the Code Geass stuff together etc. I also have a few figures around various other parts of my room (which you can see more of on my blog if you missed it a few months ago and are interested).

I'm about to add another shelf to my wall - I'm sure you can see why from the picture (I've even squeezed a few more figures in since that photo was taken) - and I've been thinking: there are a few different methods of arranging a figure collection that I can think of, so which is the most popular? For some reason, I'm always interested in seeing how other people have decorated their room/home, and I thought it might be interesting to see how most figure.fm members display their collection.

If more than one of the poll options applies, just choose the one that you'd call your primary method.

So, how do you arrange your figures?

I've always wondered about this - what do you buy figures for, if not to have them out on display? I'm sure you have a reason that works for you, but I've just never been able to figure it out myself.

Yeah. I've always wanted to ask some otaku about that. What's the point if you're not gonna display them? I mean, these figures were created for one thing in mind: To ogle at. If it's stored away in a closet... it seems to defeat the whole purpose of ever having them.
If they're in their boxes... it just seems to me that the person is being way too overprotective. That, or they have the ulterior motive to sell their figures elsewhere when they've become out of production, hard to find, just to make a profit. I'd say that's extremely thrifty.

I don't have anything against it as different people have different circumstances, but I also been curious for the reasons. Is it a lack of room, drop in value, embarrassment, etc?

For me, I need all my figures to be in cases because the main reason is i'm lazy to clean them. I try my best to organize it by the anime, then I use either a theme, figure design/pose, characters age, size.

It all depends. If I have multiple of the same character, they all get their own shelf in a cabinet (I have a Rin shelf, Yoko shelf, and Belldandy shelf). I also try to group by anime series/figure series (all the FREEing bunnies are together, as are the Toysworks ARIA), and I also have shelves for figure type (most of the figmas are together).

...the ones that don't really fit into those categories kind of go where there is space...

Except for the swimsuit girls, they're all gathered in a couple areas.

Truth be told though I've loved figures for long time I've never owned many. I've bought way more in the last 6 months than my entire life thus far. Though organised I have them all around. All my 50 odd full size nendo's are still boxed and neatly presented on my shelf, figma's are unboxed as I like to play with them ^^ and on my shelf. I have two PvC's flanking my monitor.

My shelves aren't quite set up how I'd like them at the moment due to a distinct lack of space, but I like to keep my figures grouped by theme. I keep my two main themes(swimsuits and girls with weapons) together and then fit things in around those. I also prefer to keep like scales together as much as possible.

Ah. Usually, I just display a few of my figures that go well together/compliment each other on my bookshelve. I don't have much space, since my books take up most of hte room, but that area left over on the shelves, I would usually place 2 or 3 figures that go well together on the spot. I'd do this throughout the bookshelves on any areas that have enough space to house 2 or more figures. And of course, on my desk, I'd usually put my favorite figure, and that's that. really.

To elaborate more on what goes well together for me, usually same scale/size is one way to go, but while I do take this into consideration, I also take into account the art style that my figures follow. Note: I only have scaled figures. No nendoroids, and no figmas. So, usually I'd put 2 or 3 same scaled figures together, but if they're not in any real harmony (if they don't compliment each other, then it won't work.)
Think of it this way. Let's say I have 3 1/8 scaled figures put together on a part of your shelf. 2 of them look like cute school girls, while the 3rd looks like a warrior lady. Obviously there's no harmony because of the 3rd figure. Usually, I would put cute girls together, and badass girls together in another group. That sort of thing.

Some are arranged by Anime series, others are by size to get maximum viability in the display case. I've had 2 detolfs that I've been using but I've re-boxed a lot of my figures and displaying them that way as well as the the 2 cases are not big enough. I will probably invest in a non-detolf display case next time.

My figures arranged partially by age (i.e., all figures purchased before 2009 are grouped together), type (nendoroids have their own shelf as do my figma/revoltech), size (1/6-1/4 scaled are in one area of my shelf), and series (Gekisou Haruhi trio is together, Vocaloid PVC figures are together, etc.). lol so basically, it's a mix-up.

I put mine in a way that they both make best use of my shelves and the limited space on my desk, while also trying to make sure I can look at them all for the best angle. For exampe, my Piece@Pieces Nagi I need to display on my top shelf, so she looks down on me ^^

I only have room for one detolf so I have to very picky what figures I buy. I cycle my figures in and out of the detolf to keep the display fresh every few months. I wish I had room for another detolf.

I usually group them by scale first, then series. Used stack of shelves, coz my room wasn't big enough, and I don't think the landlord will like the idea of me drilling holes on the wall :P. Here's how mine look like :

Overall, I tend to 'scatter' that is, display my figures in various parts of my room. Most are displayed on my bookshelves and a few are in the Detolf.

There isn't much of a pattern in how they are arranged... as for where they are, I've a bookshelf and a Detolf-esque case.

I pretty much display my figures where ever I can find some room for them. I've just about run out of room on my computer desk even with the three shelves on it, and I've got more on the way. I've started using the dresser, so Masterpiece Skywarp should have some company soon.

It may sound odd but I prefer to sort them by their color balance.
For example the Kagamine Rin&Ren and Kirisame Marisa figures on one of my shelves.
They're grouped that way because their coloring is white, black and yellow.
