Avatar - Some Thoughts
I have been reading a lot about the movie "Avatar" - I posted some photos and a short blurb a while back and decided to do some research before I go and see the film. I went to the "official" Avatar website and watched the trailer and hijacked some images.
After watching the movie clips, I understand why there is such a large viewing audience: 1. there is "mecha"; 2. Sigourney Weaver (Aliens); 3. Neytiri: 4. konbattoama; 5. fantastic graphics, and moar stuff.
.

Neytiri . . .

Sigourney (Aliens)

. . . riding a "wild thing"

KONBATTOAMA !!

Zoe who . . .?

. . . mecha !!

moar "skin" . . .

flying mecha . . .

"daily eyes" . . .

You know, when I saw Avatar, I was blown away by the graphics. But that's all that amazed me. I stand that they are the best graphic work for a movie ever, but the movie itself is really just a dissapointment. Felt like a cross between Gundam SEED and Ferngully the Last Rainforest.
yeh, Ferngully . . . didn't see no Batty Bat flitting about, also those floating islands reminded me of that cartoon show where these students transport to an alternate universe, sort of like "Beam me up, Scotty" - I'm going mostly for the popcorn and CANDY . . . :P
You must've forgotten them dragon-bat things. They smacked into walls sometimes.
Yeh, I was thinking "Code Lyoko" for those floaty island things.
It's Pocahontas in another universe. :D

pretty much sums up avatar as a movie. but the graphics were pretty nice.
There are two things that bother me about people taking that picture seriously:
1) It's more like Fern Gully than it is Pocahontas. It is almost point-for-point the same as fern Gully, whereas it requires a little bit of stretching for Pocahontas.
2) At what point in Avatar do the humans and Na'vi reconcile their differences? The Na'vi kill enough of the humans to force them to leave. Nice reconciliation!
As a joke it's a great image (and I get the impression that "joke" was the context you posted it in) but a lot of people are throwing it around like it's a serious criticism. The majority of Hollywood films are unoriginal, and Avatar is far from the worst offender. Does that justify it? Of course not, but with that in mind I do find it strange that Avatar has been so strongly singled out for it.
we can thank the media for playing the movie like it was some sort of genius thing - if you look at the trailer online, James Cameron and the movie company got sucked into thinking they had done something great 9stealing story) - the context of the post was 1. criticism and 2. a trip down memory lane for those of us who were around for "Aliens" (the first one), and of course, Ferngully. The one scene that sticks in my mind is where the Na'vi show up on their "horses" - it's reminiscent of the Hollywood westerns, where a long line of Indians rides over the horizon to attack the wagon train. I'm not a fan of Hollywood and the crap they churn out, so, yeh, my post was intended to be satirical, nothing more.
oh yeh, let's not forget Zoe Saldan - :P
Just saw the movie today, best 3 hours of my life! The graphic was just amazing, and the story are pretty good too. It really brought out the future of movies and televisions.
Story was the least of my concern as it was only the awesome CGI which got me to wach the film. Also i went to watch it for the 3d effect so it was more better :)
