Apple iPad, mini post

Posted by hkimxi [www]

I'm gonna make a longer post with more info either on figure.fm or my blog which I will link to later on. For this post, I'm just gonna give a rundown of the basics.

  • It will have a 9.7 inch LED lit IPS screen (a variant of LCD found in newer iMac models)
  • Bluetooth, 802.11n, 3G (select models only, more on that later)
  • Will have almost all apps available through the AppStore along with special iPad specific ones that developers are working on
  • It will feature a new iBook store and the ability to download and read iBooks onto the device similar to the Kindle/Nook
  • Will come in 6 flavors, a combination of either Wifi or Wifi+3G and 16/32/64GB.
  • Pricing is as follows - Wifi only: $499 16GB, $599 32GB, $699 64GB. Wifi+3G: $629 16GB, $729 32GB, $829 64GB.
  • Will be released in two time frames, late March for Wifi only and mid April for Wifi+3G models.

I really don't see who do they target it at.
Would suck as a book reader. No "real" OS with multitasking and ability to use "real" application sort of limits what you can do with it too.
I already have an iPhone and I don't need another one with just bigger screen.

Now, if it was running MacOSX that might have been somewhat interesting and that certainly would be an assault on netbooks, after all netbook with touch capabilities and detachable keyboard would make it more useful in certain situations.

I never said I thought this device was worth it. Sure it's amazing and I do want one, I'm still trying to convince myself that it's a financially sound and practical purchase. I feel the same way about how it doesn't run OSX or allow multi-tasking, but seeing the device and how it works proves that the iPhone OS can be tweaked to work on a somewhat larger device. My biggest gripe is that I still can't watch .mkv on it, meaning no anime on the go.

Yes, highly dissapointing. I thought it would at least work as a mobile movie player, cause than some chaps might find it useful. But then Mr. Jobs said: iPhone OS: No flash, no multitasking aka which means it's also just as restricted as the iPhone.
Even the biggest fanboy has to admit that we are looking at Newton 2 here (but Newton was actually innovative back then).
Mr. Jobs also said it's better than those cheap Netbooks but those come with a fully fledged OS, dualcore Atom CPUs, ION chipsets, keyboards and are just as powerfull/ and even more (in contrast to his presentation) but cheaper.
I don't know who would like to buy this thing.

I saw it and i asked "what's the point?"
I'm sure there are gonna be some apple-tards who are gonna go around saying stuff like it's so innovative, and it's the best thing ever. Sure, if you have $499-$699 to blow on something that isn't as good as a regular laptop, go for it. I for one, think it's useless. I'd rather just buy a second laptop with that money. It's just more practical.

im just disgusted at apple products, sure theyre pretty and all, but when something comes out, EVERYONE buys it... then when apple releases a better version like iphone 3gS, everyone went and flocked to that, abandoning their previous 3g in the process... Sheep....

    Waste of money...

I bet there were no women in the focus group determining what to name this thing. That's also a huge bezel on that thing, that looks like it would get smudged extremely easy. Almost looks like one of those digital picture frames.

    I think this product fail
no built in camera, usb or a memory card slot , though you can attach one yourself via the "Apple dongle"

Another $130 for a 3G? that is more expensive than a $60 dongle cost

First impression was that the iPad looks like an over-sized iTouch. Considering its capabilities the iPad is limited. I was hoping for something "short of a laptop yet better than a netbook" while utilizing their touchscreen technology and sleek design. From the initial look, Apple failed to live fully to that expectation on a broader scope. Though, with its advantages I'm sure quite a few people will absolutely love the iPad to fulfill their needs.

Time will tell how this goes.

Great for organizing and viewing photos but no SD slot to get the photos onto the iPad.
    Whose brilliant idea was that?

There's an SD card adapter that Apple will sell separately allowing pictures to be transferred over to the device. In fact, that's the sole purpose for the SD card adapter since it can't be used for extra storage space.

Even as a devoted mac user, I have to say I really am disappointed. It's a huge shame that it can't run OSX, basically meaning that this an oversized ipod touch. Hopefully they will come out with a better one eventually.

If you do that, you'd be really silly, since it doesn't actually allow for phone calls. I'm sure Apple is trying to create a new niche market here. Who knows, maybe they're trying to compete with Kindle? Maybe gen 2 will actually be a device the general populous will want to buy...

I just see no point at all when Win7 runs smooth on a Netbook with 1gb of ram and a 16gb SSD like my Asus s101. Yes your iPhone apps will run on it, but those are designed to look good on the smaller iPhone screen. You still also need to re-encode all your movies to .mp4, which I'm used to with the iPhone but my lord what a drag.

You also need to buy all sorts of extra adapter cables and converters because the thing has next to no ports on it. It will ultimately live or die by the apps available to it from the Apple store and oh since its not running a full OS good luck dual booting it with windows 7 like I was hoping to.

Rumour has it that the next iPhone will be 64gb with a 5mp camera, auto focus and have an led flash. I'd rather save my money and get that later in the year than one of these iPads.

An iPhone upg every 2 years that can be bought on a plan makes so much more sense to me.
