Proposal for the Screening of Anime Movies in Singapore

I’ve written a letter to Cathay (a major Movie Theater Corporation in Singapore) to request the screening of Anime movies. Here’s the letter:
Dear Sir/Madam
On behalf of the large following of Anime fans, I would like to suggest the showing of Anime movies in your cinemas.
With your previous screening of the ‘Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance’ movie, many fans, including myself, were overjoyed that we were able to experience a movie from one of our favorite franchises screened in theatres. It was simply a treat.
This year, there are a multitude of Anime movies that many Anime fans in Singapore would have no hope of watching if your esteemed organisation decide not to bring in the movies. If so, as diehard fans of Japanese Animation, we would be understandably be disheartened.
Nevertheless, we are still hopeful that your organisation would favaourably consider the suggestion.
The outstanding movies are:
- Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE FIRST
http://www.nanoha.com
- The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya
http://www.kyotoanimation.co.jp/haruhi/movie/index.html
- Macross Frontier Movie: The False Diva
http://www.macrossf.com/movie/
- Fate/Stay Night Movie: Unlimited Blade Works
http://www.fatestaynight.jp/index.html
These movies are exceedingly popular in Japan and have achieved outstanding box office performances and are from the extremely popular Anime series. Since there are a significant number of Anime fans in Singapore as evidenced by the overwhelming attendance at last year’s Anime Festival Asia convention, I anticipate that the response towards these movies will be great as well.
It is a very common misconception that Anime is for children. Anime is an art form that can convey a myriad of stories and I believe that these movies can be targeted towards a much wider audience as there are many adults who are fascinated by them.
In view of above, I look forward to Anime movies gaining more presence in Singapore with the support of your organisation.
Yours faithfully
If you are an Anime fan from Singapore, I do hope that you can show and lend your support in getting more Anime Movies screened over here. (^.^) We can all do our part by bringing the wonder of Anime movies to the companies’ attention – politely and respectfully of course.
It would also be great if you anyone knows how to set up an online petition as I myself am not familiar with this field.

At least they are showing Summer Wars. Give them some time ^^
Definitely! I was overjoyed when I heard about that, but it never hurt to bring these to their attention. (^.^)
Encore films are the one that brought Summer Wars in... along with many others... Give them some credits also mah...
I support this proposal to the fullest!! It would be so great to screen anime movies here in Singapore, it's really a great experience.
Yes, but I don't think me alone will do anything. We need to band together and continually show our support. (^.^)
Wait and see
I think Nanoha will be quite difficult, even if bring in I think will choose to skip it. Why? Sure we will have some scene cut away...>_<
But still hope they can bring in more, but our market are really too small, most of Anime movies will only come in during some film festivals. Hope we can see something coming this year festivals.
Channel U huh? (^.^;)
thats remind me last time when I heard the chinese voice over on Channel U or 8 for Nanoha S1...almost want to throw my TV out of the window......ORZ
Well, a nice initiative. At least some headway was already made in Singapore with other movies, so maybe you'll get lucky.
Over here, I don't think they'd even bother responding to a letter like that. 'Anime, what's that??' -___-
Indeed... And when you try to explain they say "Aren't you too old for that?" >.>
Well I could even live with that...I'd just nag at them until they get it ^^. It's just that over here anime isn't even known, so I don't even get to that point....
I would really hope that anime movies could show up on more country including my country, even though malaysia is near to singapore, but the type of movie screening is far different, if anime movies could make it to our country, i would be extremely exciting!
While you're at it, can you extend these offers to Malaysia as well? XD I'm eager to watch those movies...
Waku-waku over Eva 2.0 in March...
Aren't there any smaller chains or independent cinemas in Singapore? You might have better luck with those. Bigger chains are generally much more interested in making money than in pleasing niche markets.
i want my Yu-Gi-Oh! 10th anniversary movie
:(
wow it is cool for u to take such action. i will lend you my support whichever i can ^^. ganbate!!
You have my support too, about time someone appealed for anime movies to be screened, since about half of the population in singapore are most probably otaku
Not really, but you know what I mean...
Go create a Facebook Group. Simple.
This is a good idea. The important thing in this case, however, is to moderate membership and make sure that ONLY Singaporeans join. It doesn't do any good for the cinema company to see a million members in a group if they're not all from Singapore.
(^.^) Very regretfully, I'm not a very competent user of Facebook or other networking site. Bizarre, I know. ()^.^:
What a Coincidence, In Malaysia We too Have a Cinema called Cathay Cineplex which is premiering EVA 2.0 This March 11th .
Can't wait to watch an anime on the Big Screen for the first time ^_^ .
support! support!!
Thumbs up!
Also, maybe try contacting encore films might be possible too? Since encore films brought in quite some japanese animations movies like Totoro, Ponyo, etc and Summer Wars too.
Yes finally someone gave them(Encore Films)some credit!
Will forward this mail and this URL to someone in Encore Films too.
That would be spectacular! Thanks so much for the support! (^.^)
Really hope they will screen the Gundam 00 movie~
Can't wait for summer wars! Saw it online, but nothing beats seeing it on the big screen!
Man...I wish theaters here in Canada would do that. I've asked these theaters but have yet to receive a reply.
I say you a lucky guy if you get Nanoha the First Movie showing in Singapore...why can't there be a large anime fanbase here in Canada...
Having been working with most movie distributors both locally & internationally in my field of business, I have a glimpse at how the film industries are being operated.
I’ll cut it short in summary to address the said film (anime) for a niche market (anime fans). Firstly, if a certain movie title is carry by an international movie distributor (e.g. Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox etc…), commonly they will have regional office in the country & making these movies available to the local residence will be logistically as simple as paperwork.
While on the other hand, for a cinema operator to bring in a low profile movie (yes, anime is considered minority in most country other than it origin, Japan), the local movie distributor (as in your case, Cathay Keris-Films Pte Ltd) have to buy the license from the original movie distributor in Japan.
After successfully acquired the film license, it have to be send to the national censorship board to be review & for any sensitive medium will be censored, then being rated (PG-13, R-18) before it is release to the cinema operator for public screening. Then the final stage will be the pre-release promotional campaigns via media like TV & printed ads. At each of these stages, from acquiring the movie license to screening to the public, it cost substantial amount of money.
At the end of the day, the movie they brought in must make them profit. Let’s do some (as example) simple internal budgeting with the smallest cinema hall at 100 seats, screen time at 6 shows per day & showing for 14 days, [(100 seats X 6 halls = 600 seats a day) X 14 days] = 8400 seats (take into calculation that not every show will have full-house, at most 90 seats), and minus the cost of variable expenses. Ticket priced at $10 X 8400 seats = $84000 of revenue for a single movie during it screening, yet this equation is very optimistic. In summary, if the profit doesn’t justify the cost of bringing in a movie, then it most likely won’t materialize.
So now you can see the realistic of the business world, it isn’t as simple as just with an overwhelming online petition would succeed in bringing a certain movie to be release locally. Nevertheless in my case, we did, with the assistance of people’s power (otaku network) to successfully convinced Cathay Malaysia to make EVA 2.0 available to Malaysia anime fans ;-)
The point is you’d taken the initiative to make something happen, as the saying goes “Do nothing, nothing will happen, do something, something might happen”. Now you only need solid numbers for the petition, starting off by making an awareness of a niche market demands is the first step.
In addition, most cinematic 35mm film reel have an expiration date of 1 year, after that the film can’t be use anymore, so it’s not a fixed asset.
*I’d emailed you the contact detail of Singapore’s Cathay correspondent, all the best otaku comrades ;-)
.
Agreed...
I guess if they can't bring it over...we will just have to rent a movie theater instead...of course someone has to bring the movie over...but at least we will have a chance to see it here....
thanks actar for kicking things off with your letter (and awesome mock up pic!) and to tueac for bringing me here ;)
well as wisefreeman has said, the movie theater business is pretty realistic because after all it is a "business." if to the theater owners, the ticket sales numbers at the end of the day doesn’t justify the cost of playing a certain type of film, then it most likely won’t materialize.
truth it, it is not "bringing in" the anime that is the hardest, because anyone with money to burn can do that really. it is being able to persuade the stakeholders to have anime shown on the big screen in their theaters, on their TV stations, to be sold as DVDs in their shops, that is the hardest. and the only way we can begin and continue persuade them, is to show them that there is really a demand for such products.
that is why it is really important for the us to show our belief and love for anime, by proving to the theater owners, tv stations, DVD shops, that playing/selling anime on/in their screens/shops can actually be worth it for them. and this must be done by letting them see the numbers, because at the end of the day, they are businesses after all.
hence, whenever a good anime movie is out in the theaters, please do go and support it! and of course don't just support it for the sake of doing so, if the anime film is really genuinely good, tell your friends who are not really anime fans, it might surprise them! then in due time, i hope we'll have as vibrant of a marketplace where anime fans can readily and legitimately enjoy whatever title they seek to catch, while non-fans can have a better opportunity to appreciate what they have been missing out.
btw, "Summer Wars" opens exclusively at Orchard Cineleisure, The Cathay and Cathay AMK Hub this Thursday 25 Feb! *hint hint*
Also, "Professor Layton and The Eternal Diva," (yes THAT Prof Layton from the Nintendo DS) will show in cinemas from 18 March too! *cough cough*
