Losing interest in anime stuff?

hey all dc memebers. hows it going?
its been awhile since i made my own upload.
i am just having my vacation in taiwan and i am going to hong kong in a few days. i stayed here for a whole month and honestly i didn't go crazy shopping for anime goods this time. i so far bought a few figures, some trading cards, a few sets of manga, and some other anime related items. i feel like i am losing interest. back then whenever i see something i want, i will buy it. or i will even pre order items or find out any limited items that i can get my hands on. now, i rarely check out up coming figure releases. i will just go to the store and see what kind of surprises i will get. last time when i was in taiwan and hong kong, i pretty much pick up a figure or 2 every 2-3 days. now, i just don't have that craving for figures and stuff. don't get me wrong, i am still into figures and all that crap, but i am not as hardcore i was back then.

any of you people out there going through this?

p.s anyone have a scan of my page in otacool from last year? would be awesome if anyone out there is willing to show me!

I know for myself its a funds issue so I no longer site jump to get my pre-orders on regularly. I also have to admit that I am running out of room and have started to be more stringent on my Figure picks as to ensure I get the ones I really want. At this rate I give it another six months or so before I have to start selling of figures in order to make room for others.

    Don't worry about it.
It's natural for people to change the magnitude of their interests or their interests in general. ^^

Hey Fran, this also has happen to me and I believe happens to a lot of people. Their can be many reasons behind this depression. My reasons was being busy, my crowd and nothing interest me. I had times where I watched almost everything and times I completely stop for a long time, brought everything that even just slightly interest me. I like to believe i'm as big of a fanatic as I was, but I am just in more control of my impulsive buying and wiser. The present me watch anime that I want to watch and buy stuff that really interest me.

i totally agree with you. ever since i started my new band, i kinda went back to buying music gear and stuff. and also, i have a kid now, i feel bad for buying stuff for myself and not for him. also, i think there isn't any new characters i like in recent animes.

I second that, and with some big expenses looming and a paycut. I have to consider wether I like it that much that I would buy it. Planning on trimming my entire 1/6th fig collection, Military models and a few anime figures. The wife is also complaining I am gradually encroaching the whole house with boxes. However I remain a staunch figma collector.

You're losing interest in it because you're surrounded by it, and it's become something almost second nature. The reason why people are so interested in anime is because of it's style. It's different from the usual (if you're outside of Japan most likely) and people are just fascinated by it. If you live with it every day, or so much so, that it's so common, it's only natural that it'd get boring.

Of course, people that have a lot less in their collection (lol me...) are more likely to be interested in it, while people who have a lot more, are probably thinking of ways to sell off some of their older things if they lose interest, just so they can grab newer releases.

I know there are a few addicted crazies on this site, but I respect people who realize their priorities and know that anime and figure collecting isn't gonna feed you. It's just an expensive hobby.

well, since i was a kid, watching anime is like watching cartoons. i just treat them as cartoons. i moved to canada when i was about 7. i was watching power rangers but all my friends are asian at that time so we talk about dragon ball and play japanese video games and etc. i guess you are right, i have been exposed to anime all my life. but my whole crave of anime figures and addiction started in 2007. after watching fate stay night, i fell in love with saber and had to buy a figure just to remember the show. after a few figures and doujin the night before i had to leave for canada, i knew i was addicted.

Fran, you've got nothing to worry about, I know what it's like what you're going through; there have been times where my interest in anime has waned; but eventually, it comes back stronger than before. Lately, I haven't been watching as much anime as I used to, but I still greatly enjoy it. In regards to figures and such, I didn't start collecting them until last August, I see TONS of awesome stuff that I'd like to have, but some things are simply beyond my reach. So even with these occasional "downturns" I will always enjoy my hobby/lifestyle and I (and you) always will.

    Hey man.
If your not getting to "into" anime and merchandse now go back in time man!
I was dying when "Code Geass R2 ended and the Moe-blob-attack began.
The solution for me was some "EVA" mixed with a little "Gundam X".
It let me survive until some shows I was more interested in came out.

    And here's your page - http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t79/darkmuskrat/Fran-man.jpg?t=1267392744
(Not to mention your on the cover 2-up, far right)

If you still are all "meh", buy a Minori figure(Koharu Biyori) to "dock" with you Yui :3

thanks so much for the scan man, i really appreciate it. i was very depress when code geaass ended. at least the next code geass is coming out soon. the only thing worth watching for me now is Kimi ni todoke and some old anime such as tekkaman blade and some old school mecha stuff from the 90's. i guess anime these days is a real let down. good suggestion for the minori figure, i totally forgot about it.

      again, thanks for the scan!

I tend to rotate between anime and game moods. Lately it's been mostly games, especially with the onslaught of games coming this march. Although the wave of K-ON figmas has gotten me into figures once more, plus Anime North slowly approaches.

In my case, its not so much as loosing interest in anime related merchandise, but closer to getting into other things (i.e. collecting and replicating movie props). I have become very very picky with my figure buying as of late, but thats more of a budget issue, as my money goes first and foremost towards gunpla (which i have never lost any interest in whatsoever)

Sometimes though I feel like losing maybe because I'm just frustrated having or getting one. People tend to have a rollercoaster emotion & sometimes we are confused with all these mixed up emotions.

It's quite the opposite for me. I'm still addicted to buy figures and I'm looking forward to this year's upcoming releases but I definitely will limit the amount of spending. I'll only buy stuff that looks worth getting. I will admit, there may be few times where I do get bored but this is the fandom I always find myself coming back to agian and again. It really depends how the anime industry will evolve though.

I get what you mean, it happens to me all the time, I call it "Anime Burn-out" when you just engross yourself in anime too much and then lose interest in it for a period of time, just as an example, I experience Anime Burn-out once every year and a half just because I just bury myself in it just a bit to much and I usually come out of it after say 3 to 4 months. This can apply to figures and other anime collectibles as well.

IMO it's only a matter of time before you start the cycle again and start watching/collecting as much as you can and then stopping for a while and then start up again.

But that's just how it works for me, hopefully you dont lose complete interest in anime/manga and figures.

The brilliant thing about Anime is that there's always more of it. when you get tired of a series, there's always another series for you to go crazy about.

For me, Anime is something that I never see myself getting out of. Honestly, if I lose interest in Anime, I literally lose the one thing that makes my life worth living.

Anime is important for me, but other things come first. School, family, friends, work.
Sometimes with all these factored in, I do forget (or lose interest in) anime.
Still through I always come back to it. It's normal. It just means there are more
important things that you have your interest in.

I know your pain. I have had that happen to me a couple of times. Lately though, I have been wanting to watch anime but I have been studying japanese, at a friend's house, or gone away from home. I only have like 12 figures but I didn't get into buying them until last year. I just don't have a lot of funds as well. I had to give up my gaming hobby because between anime, airsoft(survival gaming), figures, etc I can't keep enough money as it is. When I buy a figure, I have to absolutely positively want it.

Maybe you're getting more picky with what figures you buy. If its not money or space limitations, then you're probably content with what you have already. Also if you see opportunities for new figures all the time, the novelty wears off.

In my experience, money and space made me cut back my figure expenses. But after discovering DannyChoo.com and figure website networking, I'm back into it again. However, instead of spending money on multiple 20-60 dollar figures I feel are sort of cool looking. I hold out for the absolutely amazing figures that may be almost 100 dollars, but I may only get 1 or 2 a year. I appreciate what I buy even more, instead of feeling like moving on to the next figure if you get a lot of them.

This is just me. For those of you that post your Monthly Loots, I am jealous.

for sure i am getting more picky. i usually ask my wife for opinions of certain figures i will buy. these days, all figures are around 100 bucks with i think it's a little too much for PVC's. i know what you mean about the people with monthly loots. it's quite amazing how some people buy so much in a month.

I read a blog entry about this once, where it said that once you start trimming your collection (in this case figures; you keep the ones you really like and sell/get rid of the ones you don't like) you know your hobby is there to stay, unlike people who just get into the bandwagon due to current popularity.

Most probably is that you're not losing interest, you're just getting selective over it since you already had some time collecting figures. You find out the ones you like the most and just get those. I do the same too; at the beginning I wanted to get all the figures I laid my eyes on. Now I just get the ones I really, REALLY want and know won't ever get tired of. Effectively the ones I don't like anymore and are prepared to get sold are the ones I bought at the beginning of my figure hobby.

congratulations! actually you're upgrading, i think. this one taken from http://spoa.freeshell.org/commentary/SPOAEvolution.html

    YOU ARE:

Phase 3 – The Butterfly Otaku or “Rock Bottom”: Somewhere the stage of devouring every anime in sight has leveled off. You have plateaued (or bottomed out, depending on your perception). Your habit isn’t quite so all consuming anymore. You don’t watch everything, you start to become choosy in the anime that you watch. You know what you like and what you don’t like. You have your ear to the wire, and you know just what anime out there will be worth your time and what will be crap. You probably have at least one regular and reliable source of anime-related news. Perhaps you subscribe to a decent newsletter (Animenation’s or the TRSI), visit a well-reknowned news-site (animeondvd.com!), or have a favorite fanzine or magazine that you read (EX or Protoculture Addicts). You are well aware of upcoming releases and follow them regularly. You’ve probably found some friends (be it online or in the real world) who share your passion, and talk with them regularly on the subject. You’ve also probably picked up at least one of anime’s many sub-hobbies (modeling, costuming, drawing, J-Pop, etc.) Somewhere during this phase you start going to conventions (Otakon, Anime Central). Occasionally this happens during Phase 2, but it really depends upon how old you are, what kind of transportation you have access to, and where you live. But by Phase 3 it has become enough of an obsession that you regularly find your way to them. Convention attendance is the most important step in achieving (or degenerating to) Phase 3. You begin to notice just what position among anime fandom that you hold. You are now a social creature, and have begun to notice the common trends that otakus share. Your recent additions to your collection are probably only anime that you think are really good, as opposed to just anything from Japan. You can now make jokes about fandom, write useless articles such as this one, and probably have made several web-pages, character shrines, and so forth. Another important characteristic is your desire to educate other, less-evolved otaku (or drag them down with you, as it were). You have blossomed into a full-fledged otaku. You have seen finally experienced enough anime and anime-fandom, and you have matured enough to intelligently critique and appreciate it.

Common Traits: Slightly more attention to hygiene than Phase 2 Otaku. Often appear in costume. Are active members in their respective club.
