Alice in Wonderland - My MiniReview
This post features some of the good sides of the movie... Perhaps I should create another entry for the movie's downside?

So I've recently seen the new movie Alice in Wonderland by Disney, and to start of this mini-review post on a positive - I must say the movie came above my expectations. Thinking that this was just another Disney movie aimed for the younger audience, and being very very disappointed at their movie prior to Alice in Wonderland - The Princess and The Frog, I really couldn't believe how this was, as an understatement, a highly awaited film. But with a semi-star studded cast: Helena Carter as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Alan Rickman or our ever so hated Snape of the Harry Potter franchise as the wise Blue Caterpillar (I forgot his name) and of course, who would forget Johnny Depp as Mad Hatter - this movie was bound to be good.

What makes this movie stand out from the latest blockbusters is how the story progresses. Unlike the recent fantasy movies such as Avatar, Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief (which was fairly good), and whatnot, the flow of this movie takes you on a journey. No, it's not FULL of action, nor is it FULL of comedy, but the story certainly gets there at the right scenes, at the right time. The film starts out a bit dull, lifeless, and colorless (actually reminded me of Peter Pan - not in a bad way XD). Whether or not this was a mistake of the director, scriptwriter or whoever, I still liked how this complimented the rest of the movie. That dullness in the real world highlighted the "madness" of life in Underland (or Wonderland as Alice called it). The movie picks up very well from the dull scene of the real world, to the very lively scene of Underland. Most movies can't carry this concept of "journeying" their audiences through a story well, but Alice in Wonderland surely did it perfectly.

Basically, the movie was about Alice returning to "Wonderland" now as a teenager, and only recalls her past travel to Wonderland as a dream when she was a child. According to a few of my friends, this movie was a take on the book "Through the Looking Glass" which I've heard before, though I never really knew what that was. This time around, the inhabitants of Wonderland were torn in between the rule of the cruel Red Queen and the kingdom of the White Queen. The White Queen ruled back when Alice was a child, but an event happened wherein the Knave of the Red Queen was able to get his hands on the White Queen's crown and sword. The sword was an artifact and rival to the Red Kingdom's Jabbawokee (a giant dragon). With the sword in the White Kingdom, and the Jabbawokee in the Red Kingdom, the forces of both Kingdoms were equal - but again, the sword fell into the hands of the Red Kingdom, crumbling the White Kingdom's morale. Similar to when Alice was a child, the Red Queen brought Alice into her castle (not knowing that this was the same as the child Alice) and acquired the queen's favor.
What's quite noticeable about this movie though is that it somehow is not anymore centered on Alice herself. It tends to linger between a story mainly about Alice, and most of the time, it appears to be a story about vengeance between the three (supposedly "minor") characters - White Queen, Mad Hatter, and Red Queen.

The CG on this movie was amazing as far as computer generated characters were concerned. The 3D lets you appreciate the environment and atmosphere MUCH better, though that's only if you fancy scenery (which I personally do). Disney's concept on the Card army of the Red Queen, and the Chess army of the White Queen were well put into the movie. They don't look as they did on the old Disney cartoon, instead they got more of a knightly and fiercer look. The characters too were well put in the movie. (Though I don't remember how Alice was in the old cartoon movie) Alice showed a rather lonesome character, and started blasting with emotions and power when she arrived in Underland. In some movies, especially Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief, characters can't carry the concept of changing personalities very well - but in Alice in Wonderland, it seemed natural that Underland boosted Alice's personality. Mad Hatter too was amazing - A demonic character who seems shallow and crazy but truly is deep and ALWAYS has another trick up his sleeve. What more could you expect with Johnny Depp in Mad Hatter's shoes? ...or Hat? XD Red Queen was depicted well. With her big head, and her court committee with their obnoxiously huge body parts, they give the comedy twists in the story.

All in all, I give this movie a two thumbs up. I'd give more if I had more than two, but sadly, I don't. I really hope you guys can go see it for yourselves!

I highly recommend you watch the original 1951 Disney film since this actually more of a remake of that and that of Lewiss Caroll's book. They've pretty much combined bits and parts from Alice in Wonderland, Through the looking glass and the (non-canon) return to wonderland/Alice thru the needle's eye.
I'll second that...
I'm still skeptical bout this movie frankly. Most of the Alice in Wonderland remakes I've seen have been pretty naff frankly, even SyFy's more recent one. I just... Burton's going a little too manic lol... and I just hope the movie hasn't been made to be about the Hatter, like they did with Charlier & the Chocolate Factory lol.
Will probly be seeing it next wednesday, and Legion too :woop:
Hmmm.. I want to read those books. But the trouble there is finding them. XD
I saw it last night myself, I opted for the non-3D print, as I wanted to actually see the graphics and 3d annoys me after a while.
I actually really enjoyed this movie, though part of me felt like something was missing... I don't know what but I wanted something more. The graphics and characters were really great and felt very real. Usually characters like this become flat and boring.
I'd recommend it as a watch. it's at least a high B for me.
I too felt something was missing. To be truthful, the first thing that came into my mind was "It's over?!" Maybe it's because such a good story being put on a 1 hour and 55 minute screen play is not enough. Perhaps a longer script is at hand.
very interesting post and comments - I still prefer the book!! Sounds like Burton drew pretty heavily on the game. I'll probably go see the film - I guess I'm just tired of Johnny Dep, shoulda got Tom Petty who played the Hatter in the T.V. version . . . or Brad Pitt who plays a great demented character (see "13 Monkeys" with my fav Bruce Willis). . . and if you like books, have a look at "the Rabbit, Whole", a post I did on my Salvador Dali illustrated "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" - not a lot of text but some interesting photos of a few of the illustrations. BTW, nice review! :D
The thing about Johnny Depp is that the concept of "a crazy character with another trick up his sleeve" is already stamped on his stardom. So most of the movies that he stars in which are labeled blockbuster or high-rating are movies wherein he plays such characters. I think he's the perfect fit under the Mad Hatter's hat. I think Brad Pitt would come too unnatural, and Tom Petty might be too much. XD
The previews on this one scared my niece lol. The mad hatter is seriously one creepy guy in this movie. I for some reason think the movie is straying off the path of what it used to be.
That's the issue. They should really put weight on how this is made to be "BASED" on the book/Disney Cartoon, and not an "ADAPTATION" of the book/Disney Cartoon. Meaning there is no specific "path" they're limited to follow.
If you're talking about MadHatter, I must agree. The movie became less about Alice, and became more about Vengance on the side of MadHatter and the two Queens.
And yeah, Mad Hatter is pretty scary. XD He also turns demonic in some instances of the movie.
I am looking forward to seeing this. Good review. I am a big fan of Tim Burton, he is one of my favourite directors as he does fantasy movies for both adults and children.
Yeah. Tim Burton can make children's movies into an all-age movie. Awesome director indeed.
Might go watch it. I was kinda expecting this to be just another disney movie.
And like I said, after seeing it, that opinion of mine changed too. XD It came out to be a good movie and not just another Disney movie.
Is it just me or does Johnny Depp look like Elijah Wood in this poster?
The cheeck bones probably. XD
with tim burton always darker
Yeah. He's a guy of gloomy and dark movies.
I'm afraid I have to disagree (although not that much). Almost everything about the movie was cookie-cut from generic Hollywood stories. It was kept at a regular pace, but that very same pace made every moment of the movie seem as something mundane (I can't explain it very well. it's like it just kept bombarding one thing after the other without letting you process the information; by the time everything's over you're numb).
It's not bad, but it has a lot of lost potential; in my opinion it could have been much more than what it was.
What happened to Disney? Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland does not compare to the original animation. I remember when I was a child I would watch films like The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians and be amazed! Now, Disney has gone downhill and its films seem to be getting worse and worse as time goes by. If you ask me, many <a href="http://www.dozenkids.com">kids websites</a> like Disney's should not be listed on the top category of sites like http://www.twitter.com/dozenkids. Is it time for us to realize that Disney is not really what it used to be and in fact it now scraping the barrel of entertainment?
