WHICH SUCKS!!!!!!!

i think he kinda looks like Light
Let see if the Japanese version or Americain version is better(not a big fan of Zac but big fan of Tatsuya)

Old news... very very old news... In fact, this news seems so old that I don't think they pushed through with it. XD
On the other hand, I think an "American Death Note" is fine... No matter who'll play the characters.
Old News is REALLY OLD .
This is So Last Year
this is for the people who don't know or new to figure fm.
and yes Light is going to be call Luke, no more L suger cubes.
please sign ur name if u disagree here http://www.petitiononline.com/apple88/petition.html
I have seen the petition, and I have to ask... Why stop at Zac Efron? Shouldn't the petition be opposed to the production of the movie itself?
yes!
This wouldn't be the first time a Japanese manga/anime series gets messed up by anyone making a live action version outside of Japan. Really.
I totally called it. I mean, he looks so much like Light!
This news makes me wonder who will play L now...
Cillain parker(i think)
nah its photoshoped
Samuel L Jackson. Duh. I don't think anyone else could pull it off.
Don't know but sounds like another ugly attempt to make money over art. I'm almost sure they are gonna mess it up and ruin the ideal!
Am I the only one who would be okay with this?
His acting is so overdone I think he'd be perfect for Light.
This could be wonderful if someone did something DECENT with it. Like, oh, you know~ -actually stuck to the story and all the elements that made it good in the first place. :( I'm still too scared to watch the American DragonBall movie...
Dragon Ball Evolution was fail.
That's what came to my mind when I heard about this, uh oh another Dragon-fail. It's like when America takes British movies or comedies and try's to do an American version ands its always fail, just bad. Why can't they stick with their own ideas and not try and use other, sure if they did good jobs it would be sweet, but often they dont *sigh* poor poor Deathnote.
Yeah, I've been hearing about this for a while. This kinda seems like a stretch from tweeny flicks for Mr. Efron. He does resemble Light but... I don't know... Death Note is so overexposed that very little would really excite me about the project under any circumstances.
the horror. zac efron cannot play light T^T
American live action adaptations of Anime/Manga should not be made. If a live action movie must be made, it must be executed well. One of the problems with Anime turn live action movies is that it has to please the hardcore fans and general movie going audiences as well. It’s the curse of adaptations. People will inevitably compare them to the originals.
Bad live action adaptations give audiences who are new to the franchise a bad impression of the original Anime. These people might not even know how epic or awesome the original is.
One of the main problems is that, from my experience, American Live Action movies do a terrible job in adapting the 'Japaneseness' over and will try to localize the hell out of it. Most of the time, the adaptation will not be faithful to the original at all and the name will only serve to add marquee value, to draw fans of the original work to see the movie. Don't these people ever learn from Dragonball and even Godzilla?
Just license the Japanese movie and play that in theaters. If a live action movie has to be made, it has to be done by the Japanese.
seconded
But people should know the difference between a "Based On" movie and an "Adapted From" movie... This is one common mistake for critics...
Well put Actar, they should either promote and show originals or else come up with their own ideas and work, not make terrible versions of someone elses work.
I concur. This is an American saying this too :) If people really want to see a live action adaptation of an anime, then they should look to the Japanese for this. The live Deathnote series from Japan was well done, in my opinion.
Fail.
People are always bashing something, but hey, it's not like you have to watch it. It's a choice. There are people who want this to happen and people who don't. Better to not ruin it for the people who want it.
Personally, doesn't matter if it happens or not. As I never liked Death Note from the start. But, if this ever does happen, I can say it would at least be interesting. If not something to laugh at.
I swear, a lot of people here overexaggerate things over the dumbest shit.
While I do agree with you to a certain extent, the main issue with horrendous live-action adaptations is that people who have never seen the original work might be fooled into thinking that it's just as horrible as the live-action movie, hence tainting the image of the original work.
As fans of the original, we don't want to see that happen.
It has already been proven that Hollywood remakes of Anime/Manga or generally Japanese franchises have been terrible, from Dragonball Evolution to Godzilla to even horror franchises like The Ring.
Also, usually, people who see these remakes are more often than not, already fans of the original and will not be pleased with the liberties taken with the movie.
You are right about one thing. Majority of the people who are interested in watching live action adaptations are people who have already seen the original anime. Therefore, your point is valid to that point.
However, people who haven't seen the original anime, likely aren't gonna know that the live action was based off the anime in the first place, unless it is stated by the show itself in the opening or, unless the viewer actually decides to search it up. And, there is a chance that the person watching the live action is watching it, because the anime itself doesn't interest the viewer. You can't simply say that a bad live action will mean that people who haven't seen the anime will automatically assume the anime is bad. That is just your opinion you're trying to sell off as a fact.
As for the people who have watched the live action, and decide to check up on the anime itself: There's this wonderful thing called the internet, where people can find out the reviews of shows and whatnot. You're not giving viewers the credit they deserve. Not everyone is the same, so don't treat everyone the same.
If I saw a live action and found that it was bad *as a viewer* I wouldn't mind going on the internet to see how the anime fares. Usually if the live action sucks, the anime in question also sucks, or the acting just wasn't that good. As far as I'm concerned, even actors like Zac Efron have the potential to make a very badass character in my opinion. There's no point being biased about an actor or the presumption of a live action just because of their previous roles.
Dragonball was not a Hollywood film by the way...
Though I must agree... compared to the original Japanese counterpart, the American version of The Ring was barely a pint of H-O-R-R-O-R. The Japanese version DEFINES horror!
all japanese made we know both anime and games
that where converted or remaid in US ver. will FAIL.
look what thay did with DOA?, Tekken?, Dragonball?.
well the 3D astro boy US version that, may be OK.
The funny thing is that there already is a decent, if not awesome, live-action adaptation of this done produced, directed and acted by Japanese. Why bother???
Because the economic market is obviously based in America, and since the native language there is English, it would make sense. The companies who made Death Note and the company responsible for doing the live action would profit from it. This isn't about pleasing fans. It's all about corporate capitalism. Companies are out there to seek profits. And pleasing the fans comes only second to the money that is made.
Again, true. But it's just more proof that Hollywood is running out of ideas...
Why Zak Efron. Is that how you spell it?
As long as they make the characters the same as they were in the anime I'm fine with it
I wanna see Ryuk
No surprise there. He really does look like Light ^^;; Zac Efrons acting isn't that bad, but HSM sucked ^^;;
agree with actar^O^
Ewwwwwwwwwwww, this looks like it would suck and then make anime and manga looks bad.
I've been hating this for ages and ages. But, I'll be honest, Effron is such a cheesy actor and such fangirl-candy that nobody would expect him to be a mass murderer. It's like the perfect disguise. I doubt he'd actually be as intelligent as Light. And I don't think chip-eating would be as epic on live camera...
Old news but...
As much as I don't want to see an Americanized Death Note, I kinda want to see it happen for the lulz (even more so if Zac Efron lands the part of Light)
Why not?! He's perfect, he looks exactly like Light. Also, even if the movie sucks (really, was there much hope?) it'll be hilarious to see Zac Efron try to do the Kira Laugh.
Seriously there is no need to sign the petition just to ruined someone else career, zac efron looks ok for the role to me. People should be supportive and should be delivering ideas to the studio on how to improve, what mistakes to avoid and advice develop a better version of it. There is no need to go signing something something pathetic that says " oh lets kick Zac Efron out of the movie because he is an American and he is not the same as the japanese Kira" that is simply bashing people up for pathetic reasons, just simply don't go see the movie if you don't like it. Jeez...
I dont' see the point in this, there's already a japanese version. I reckon the japanese version should just be subbed and aired in america.
Great, another sanitized, bastardized, utterly muddled Hollywood *remake*. I guess they are running out of their own material to reboot, redo and regurgitate... (X_X)
F A I L
.
.
again.
No, no, no, nooo! This is WRONG! Japanese Death Note is the only acceptable thing for me! Doing an American version of it would be too much! OVERBOARD! Plus, it'll give DEATH NOTE a bad name. I have nothing against the American cast for the movie but I think this would be an INSULT!
anime is suposed to stay anime period, enougth with those horrible movies, DB evolution, G saviour, whats next?? Bleach and Naruto movie?
Oh God, I hope not...
Actually, this MIGHT work.
Death Note doesn't have so many traditional Japanese elements, or fantasy elements for that matter (Save the Shinigami, but let's move on.)
I am not sure about other anime adaptations brought to America live-action, but the reason why the American Dragon Ball failed was because there were too many fantasy elements going on that only work for Japanese remake. It was based on a Chinese tale after all...that's REALLY hard to Americanize.
Death Note is set in present day Tokyo, and other than the Shinigami, it's easy to translate to present America. Light might be Japanese, but let's face it Zac Efron does look like him. And it's not like Zac Efron hasn't done some really good acting over the years.
As long as the American film guys keep the core elements, this actually might work. I've seen Speed Racer and Resident Evil get their American counterparts and I actually liked it.
Either way, I don't even think this is happening. I haven't seen a valid source in the past year, so we don't have much to worry about.
I'm a fine believer in "Don't knock it till you try it" and "It's ten times worst in your head than on the screen"
Who knows, maybe he can pull it off. Maybe not. I just don't believe in bashing him for trying.
