Earthquake Figure Protection - Thanks Wolfheinrich

Posted by pedropinilla [www]

Hi my friends!

Well, as many of you should know since sometime ago many earthquakes have happened all over the world, Haití, Chile (my country) and recently yesterday in Baja California, Mexico. And I know that the matter of this post is the less important thing to worry about when a situation like this happen, but I'd like to comment the same way.

I display my figure collection in a shelf that's located to a meter of height of the floor and when the earthquake happened many things fell but thanks God my figures were safe protected by a simple plastic transparet shield that, to be honest, I use it to protect them from dust since I don't own a properly shelf with glass. I lost just a few things (some of my CD's didn't make it) but nothing important.
And for the previous thing I'd like to say thank you to a fellow member Wolfheinrich because I took the idea of the shield when seeing his room last year here in DC. Thanks my friend, without it all my figures had fallen with a terrible result, better not think about this.
The last three pictures of the post were taken from a previous post of Wolfheinrich where I took the idea of the shield, of course, all rights reserved hahaha ^^.

I also know that many of you have not only your figures but many other important things placed everywhere and because of that is that I'd like to advise you to take the precautions of your things in order to minimize the losses in case of similar situations to suffered by me. I hope that you never suffer this experience but nobody knows when something bad happens.

That's it. Hope this be useful to all of you.

Greetings.

I'm glad that the dust shield system was of use to you =D
A fair number of figures might survive a one meter fall but the same can't be said for every figures out there with more fragile components.

In reality though, a typical glass cabinet is probably more vulnerable to damage in a earthquake situation, especially like cabinet Ikea Detolf because the construction is too fragile imo to be earthquake proof. I don't have actual data to prove it but it just feel too flimsy to me.

I agree, maybe mostly because it's tall, narrow, and made by oneself, so it's prone to falling over if given the incentive.

Recently, my younger brother left the house and started his own life, now that's not with me, I really miss him.

I said that as an example because, as many of us, we care about our figures and other stuff and we get used to them but it's only when we lost some when we realize the importance that our hobbys in our lives.
For many people, figures are something meaningless but for us it's something important, it identifies ourselves as a part of what we are.

And you both are right, glass were very vulnerable during the earthquake and dangerous when broken.
Would be better if nothing of this never happen.

Glad to see that your figures are safe. I'm not too far into California but the aftershock was pretty big. I'll have to protect my precious DD soon. ^^

@AnimeAffection. We never know when something bad could happen, I mean, it's not like living in fear or afraid all the time but just be careful. Thanks for comment AnimeAffection.

@Dann. Now that I think about it, Colombia did awesome in the past South American Games that you won by 144 gold medals over Brazil (we only made it to the fifth...) and we're going to held the next in 2014 or we hope to be able to.
I said this because all the Colombians were hyper-kind to our people in every discipline, always supporting us and giving us your best wishes after the earthquake. Colombia is a friendly country with Chile, Thanks!

And about the main point, it looks like this because now I have a lot of experience with the shield that you can barely see it. Masane looks great, isn't she? keeping my taste untouched against everything hahaha^^.
      Thanks for your words.

@thebobness. like yumyu said, it's plastic wrap and it looks like this because I use quite a technique to put it, maybe someday I'll make a tutorial to show you how to do it.

I live at 15 miles from the epicenter, I also protect my figures with a plastic shield, but some of the new ones weren't protected, just one of them got their base-stick (the one where you put the figures feet to stand) broke, but everything else is perfectly fine, well some plates and glass souvenirs are all broken, but we're fine, this earthquake was pretty harsh on some of the villages outside the city, 2 deaths oficially declared by today,I'll keep on cleaning the mess >.<
